Umbrellas going up and down more regularly than a rollercoaster in Adelaide. Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes, plonked on two chairs in the tunnel, are watching on.

The covers are off, though, so we should get some play rather soonish....

So far in this match there hasn't been a spell of three or four quick wickets and that is what England have to hope for this morning.

  4. 'It's good, intense cricket'published at 02:59 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2017

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

England all-rounder Chris Woakes, speaking to Test Match Special: "Warner is a fantastic player and crucial batsman so it's always nice to get that scalp. They had a decent partnership gong.

"It's good Ashes cricket - it's intense. It's the way we want to play and the way they want to play. We're not crossing that line - it's just good, intense cricket. I'm sure both teams will continue to play as hard as they can.

"We haven't played a huge amount of day-night cricket so it's a bit of a step into the unknown. The ball has done a little bit. We have to utilise the ball while it's hard and new, and we'll look to do that this morning."

Strange goings-on in Adelaide. Rain, then sunshine. Covers on, shades on. Apparently there were queues to get in nearly four hours before play was due to start. I've heard reports of punters camping on the grass car park at the Cathedral End.

  6. rain stops play

Rain stops (or holds up) playpublished at 02:57 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2017

Sadly, the rain has got a touch heavier at Adelaide. A load of TV types have just gone scurrying off the ground under some giant umbrellas. We will indeed be in for a bit of a delay.

Meanwhile, over in New Zealand, Ben Stokes made his debut for Canterbury Kings in a 50-over domestic match.

He made two from seven deliveries before being bowled by left-arm Otago spinner Anaru Kitchen.

Canterbury set Otago 222 to win, and Stokes is currently in operation, having conceded 26 runs from his first four overs.

We've had a shower already. We're definitely going to be in for a delay here.

BBC Weather's Helen Willetts: "It looks like there is only a small risk of a shower during Sunday’s play. It’s likely to be mainly dry. If there is a light morning shower, it will move through quickly given the brisk wind.

"The following days look set to be dry with sunny spells. Temperatures will remain a little below average to start but will recover to towards midweek.

"It’ll be windy to start play on Sunday, but the wind should ease through the day and the following days look less windy."

  13. 'Smith said I was slow'published at 02:41 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2017

It's not a bad first Test wicket to have to your name, is it?

Steve Smith, it turns out, does have a weakness. He doesn't like being riled up and, as a result, he missed an off-cutter from debutant Craig Overton that went on to rearrange his stumps.

Speaking after the match, Overton said the Australia captain had described him as "slow" just before he dismissed him.

"It was nice that I beat him for pace," Overton said yesterday. "It's a pretty nice one for a first wicket. He's one of the best players in the world."

I can understand why Root did what he did. He said it was a positive move.

It was clammy, muggy, cloudy overhead and drizzly rain. I could see after all the talking he wanted to hit Australia hard, but the bowlers let him down in the first period.

In a way, we'll never know if it was a good decision or not because they didn't bowl anything like to standard.

It was only a rain break that focused their minds.

Hello! Early, isn't it? It's also just started spitting in Adelaide, but never mind. Welcome to our coverage of day two. We're starting half an hour early after rain disrupted play yesterday, so we can cram in a few extra overs. Australia will be resuming on 209-4, with Peter Handscomb on 36 and Shaun Marsh on 20.

It was a mixed day under the lights for England yesterday. They managed to dismiss Steve Smith, something which seemed impossible at the Gabba.

But England's bowlers were oddly wasteful first up, and Australia, only four down, will be the happier of the two sides going into this second day.

There was plenty of this going on, too...
