Overton and Woakes can breathe a bit of a sigh of relief. Their wickets are still in danger but their wellbeing isn't, at least from one end. Nathan Lyon comes back into the attack on the hunt for his third wicket. If you're just waking up, Lyon took a sensational catch earlier off his own bowling to dismiss Moeen Ali.

A tidy first over of the spell from the off-spinner but the reduction in the yelps from around the bat tell you there was little danger.

Maybe this is a change of attack now from Australia. Starc returns and his first delivery is one of those devilish, toe-crushing yorkers but Woakes is seeing it well now and digs the ball out. OK., perhaps not a total change. Back comes the bouncer and Woakes top-edges a cut over the slips for four! That brings up the fifty partnership. Those of you just waking up are lucky. It wasn't like this earlier.

Craig Overton is showing a lot of commitment. He's let the ball go through and he's played at the right deliveries. At least he's showing some discipline.

More runs. A short ball from Hazlewood flicks Overton's hip, evades Tim Paine and runs down to fine leg for four.

Mitchell Starc is going to come back into the attack now. He's had a half hour break. More short stuff?

The first three days in Brisbane were competitive. Then all of a sudden this juggernaut arrived and England got blown away. You can't see what this England side can do with what they've got in their ranks.

Shot! A rare full ball from Josh Hazlewood and Chris Woakes lunges forward and clatters the ball through the covers.

Get him up to number three!

  10. Eng 177-7published at 62 overs

    Woakes 21, Overton 19

Is there any point that Australia change their attack to the England tail? 76% of deliveries have been short of length since Jonny Bairstow was out. That's a lot. It still continues from Cummins but Overton survives, adding a couple to the total. Just an hour or so to go and it'll get dark. Then it'll be even harder!

In the members' area, two ladies put three small children on a high wall and want them to smile for a photo. Kids not keen. "Say smelly socks!". Nothing. "Birthday cake!" Nothing. "What about.... farting!" Huge grins. Toilet humour always works.

  12. Eng 175-7published at 61 overs

That's a very good point from Steve. Root has been criticised but who is to say this wouldn't have happened if he had chose to bat?

"Caaaatch," shout the Aussies but a top edge from Woakes lands short of Pat Cummins at fine leg. England continue to fend the ball away from their arm pits and again it falls safe. Unconvincing but safe. Josh Hazlewood doesn't think much of the shot. He stands and stares at Woakes in disbelief. Overton responds by driving for three down through the vacant mid on region. This eighth-wicket partnership is now the highest of the innings. Eeeeek.

Steve: At least this England innings makes Root's decision at the toss irrelevant.

Chris Gunn: England could have 30 wickets and they wouldn’t post a competitive total.

  14. What you've missedpublished at 06:59 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

If you're just waking up, then good morning! It's all going really badly. Here's what's happened...

Resuming on 29-1, England lost James Vince just nine deliveries into the day, before Joe Root sent a thick outside edge to third slip.

Alastair Cook looked solid before he edged a forward defensive, and Dawid Malan got a glove on a short ball as England collapsed.

Two superb return catches from first Nathan Lyon, to dismiss Moeen Ali, and then Mitch Starc to get rid of Jonny Bairstow, put Australia even further into the ascendancy.

England need 243 to avoid the follow-on, and they're currently getting peppered by short balls, while Steve Smith dwells on whether or not to bat again.

If you look at the intimidatory bowling law, it's pretty vague. But every ball now is aimed at the batsman's head. I think Overton can take care of himself but I don't think Broad and Anderson will be watching much of this, frankly.

This is now the fifth England partnership of 20 or more but the tourists are yet to have a stand of more than 30. Yet another good bouncer from Pat Cummins is directed at Chris Woakes' chest and the batsman skews the ball in the air into the leg side but it drops safe. These two have another 55 minutes to fight through to tea and I doubt there will be any change of ploy from Australia between now and then.

    A little respite. Drinks.

Jonny Morgan: Waking up to the Ashes is a bit like leaving a child unattended in the kitchen. There’s a possibility they’ve done something amazing. More likely, everything is a total mess and it’s probably for the best you didn’t see it.

You'd have to pay me a hefty sum of money to go out and face this bowling but Woakes and Overton are doing pretty well for England here. The partnership increases with another boundary as Overton hits a square cut just past the diving point fielder. That couldn't be called a full ball but it's as full as Overton will see for a while. He shows some impressive reactions to duck under another bouncer. 77 more runs are needed for England to avoid the follow-on - if Steve Smith wants to enforce it that is.
