Thanks Amy. Good morning again everyone.

With my England fan hat on I am thoroughly depressed. That wasn't a session full of ferocious fast bowling like we saw at times in Brisbane. It wasn't a period of play where the ball swung or spun around corners.

That was Australia bowling patiently and England throwing their wickets away with poor shots in what was supposedly easiest time to bat of the day.

It has not been good enough this morning. It is like England are not learning anything about Australian conditions.

Oh! Jonny Bairstow goes for another drive and the ball takes the edge of the bat, but it goes along the ground to Cameron Bancroft, who makes a fine diving save. Bairstow works off his pads for one, before Moeen takes his time to settle in. Cummins comes over the wicket, trying to get the ball in to Moeen and encourage the hook, but Moeen resists the temptation. He drives back down the ground for three, and Bairstow gets a couple off the final ball of the session.

That, folks, is tea. What a sorry morning England have had. Matt Henry will take you through tea and beyond.

Shane Connor: Absolutely gutless batting performance.

Paul Fearn: Is it possible for England to hand over the Ashes and get the next plane home? I can't watch this anymore.

  5. Eng 122-5published at 45 overs

Moeen and Bairstow exchange two easy singles as Nathan Lyon gives the ball a bit of air. Moeen's played Lyon very nicely so far, although he still has to be careful as another ball turns past his outside edge. Lyon fires through his over and then goes haring off to get his cap from the umpire. They're going to squeeze in another over before tea.

Australia are the second least likely team to enforce the follow-on these days.

In the 21st century they have only done so on 14 out of 33 opportunities. Pakistan have only enforced the follow-on once out of seven. They are the only team less likely.

    Cummins 10-2-29-2

Four! Jonny Bairstow plays the sort of shot that got Joe Root out, but he gets firmly on the front foot and launches it through the covers. It was full from Cummins, and he does it again, and this time Bairstow spoons the ball loosely towards the fielder. Bairstow lets the next few deliveries fly over his stumps, with Cummins still able to find that extra bit of bounce. As an aside, Bairstow is also batting with a blank bat, which I find very aesthetically pleasing.

I don't want to be down but I can't see a way through it for England. It seems like this will be the way it is going to be in this series.

  9. Eng 114-5published at 43 overs

Over the wicket comes Nathan Lyon, and Moeen has a trot down and carves a single away. Jonny Bairstow stays deep in his crease and hustles a single off his hip. That's proper turn from Lyon, getting the ball to fizz past Moeen's outside edge as he dangles the bat out.

Toby Tarrant: This England team is brilliant to watch in the shorter formats under Bayliss but it's meant that the batsman have completely lost sight of how to build an innings in Test cricket. Embarrassing.

Ian Barnes: Did Geoffrey bring his pads? We could do with someone who can bat for two days.

    Moeen 16, Bairstow 7

If you're getting up for an early shift, then morning! It's going badly. England have been architects of their own downfall in a way. Australia have been quick and accurate and they've sustained pressure, but they've not been bowling fast and hostile constantly. England have handed their wickets to them. Shaun Marsh's innings yesterday was built on patience. No-one's shown that from the England side. Extra bounce from Cummins and it goes flying through to Paine as Bairstow tries to shovel it off the back foot. That's a shot though. A straight drive from Bairstow beats Cummins, and goes rushing away for four.

This England side have been so used to playing an aggressive style of cricket in the last 18 months with the bat so I think they have been thinking 'let's go out and dominate'. It is different cricket in Australia. It has looked frenetic this morning.

The best way to get on top of an Australian bowler in Australia is to leave him and bore him to death. We have given it to them. It is as if they don't know how to bat time anymore.

  13. Eng 107-5published at 41 overs

Nathan Lyon doesn't half do a shift for Australia. He holds up an end perfectly. Moeen works a single, before Jonny Bairstow blocks out the rest of the over. It's very quiet around the Adelaide Oval, even from the Australia fans. It feels underwhelming.

  15. Eng 106-5published at 40 overs

England have just started flapping far too early. It all feels a bit impatient. There's no sense of control. Going for big shots straight away when they've been in the field for two days and they've seen how carefully Australia played. It's not good, particularly not at 5am in the morning. Jonny Bairstow gives Australia a sniff as he pops a Cummins delivery up in the air, but there's no fielder nearby. Ugh. That's another big drive from Bairstow at a full delivery, and again, it just beats the bat. No foot movement, no timing, nothing.

I don't think England could have had a worse morning. The manner of wickets has been what has puzzled me.

Joe Root is sat up in the dressing room, bat across his knees, looking vaguely haunted. Moeen does little for his nerves by chipping a full Lyon ball up in the air, but Lyon can't get across in his follow through to take it. Bairstow sees out the over, while Root busies himself with cleaning his bat.

If Bairstow had nicked that I might have gone back to the hotel. That is poor batting.

    Cummins 7-1-20-2

England need 243 to avoid the follow-on, in case you were wondering. That's such a good delivery from Pat Cummins. It jagged back and cut Dawid Malan in half. A good take by Paine, too. Here's Jonny Bairstow, greeted by some friendly words from Nathan Lyon, and he gets off the mark straight away with a speedy two. That's, er, not so good by Bairstow, going for a big booming drive to Cummins. Think James Vince's dismissal, and that's the shot Bairstow's just played.

That was a matter of no rub of the green for Malan. He was trying to play it as he should do. That was different dismissal to the others this morning.
