England now really are in the mire. I don't think Cook will be very chuffed with that. It was quite wide.

Cook c Smith b Lyon 37 (Eng 80-4)
I mean, what do you say?
Alastair Cook was the key man, and he's offered up a tasty catch to Steve Smith. If you're being generous, you'd say Nathan Lyon drew him forward, but it was a wide, nothing sort of ball. Cook pushed at it and got a big edge that Smith caught easily.
England still trail by 362 runs, but that feels arbitrary right now.

England have gone into the third day 400 runs behind on 14 occasions in Tests. They've lost five times and drawn nine.
Starc 9-1-21-1
Into the body goes Mitch Starc, banging in a short ball that strikes Dawid Malan on the arm. The ball goes towards short leg, who fumbles, and Malan briefly considers nabbing a single.
That's better from Starc, coming around the wicket and getting the ball up into the ribs. He goes across the body, gets the ball to go across Malan's face, and then follows it up with the sort of words that my mum used to say were neither big or clever. Malan drops a single away, before Alastair Cook pulls nicely for another one.

Alex Dover: The few seconds of hope as the score loads on the BBC Sport app, followed by the heartbreak as you discover that England have lost two cheap wickets in the first half hour of play. The cycle of pain continues.
Antony Phillipson: 11pm in New York... England three down after an hour of day three, 370 runs behind... I can't bear to follow any more and will likely now have nightmares.

They said there might be a bit of drizzle tomorrow. You mention that to the English and they get excited.
That's nice from Dawid Malan, coming out of his crease to Nathan Lyon's first ball, and driving to mid-on for a single. Pat Cummins has a shy and hits the stumps, but Malan was comfortably home. Lyon speeds through another over and Cook largely ignores it.
Time for a drink. Not to tempt fate, but quite a few Australian wickets fell after a break in play...

Cook has looked better in this innings. He has been watching the ball and has got his feet moving. Malan has come out with intent and is using his feet to Lyon. They are positive signs for England.
Cook 36, Malan 10
Meanwhile, for fans of potential Australia middle-order batsmen, Glenn Maxwell has scored another half-century in the Sheffield Shield. Back on the pitch, Mitch Starc whistles down a bouncer, and a few words, to Dawid Malan, who ducks underneath it. Starc keeps going short but it's not particularly well directed, the ball leaning to the leg side, and Malan lets the ball go through without much fuss.
Malan knocks a single off his hip, and Cook gets thwacked on the pad from the final ball of the over. He's outside the line, though, and Aleem Dar shakes his head.
You may have heard yesterday that England coach Trevor Bayliss said stump microphones should be turned off so that TV viewers cannot hear the sledging on the field.
He said he did not think it was "a great thing for young kids watching at home" to hear the sledging.
We asked you what you think, and it was close, but the majority of you don't agree with Bayliss.
In our vote 54% of you said the stump mic should not be turned off.
Nathan Lyon continues to Alastair Cook and Cook, camped in his crease, is more than content to defend. There's definite turn for Lyon, and he's found the bounce that Moeen had yesterday, as he gets one to curve past Cook's outside edge. Cook readjusts, and taps out a maiden.

England have settled for a while. There is still a lot more to do but at least they have looked more at ease.
Starc 7-1-16-1
The thing is, most teams are poor away from home. England have won series in Australia and in India - and that India victory was one of the finest you could hope to see - but they've won just one of their last seven series outside of England.
Dearie me, Dawid Malan's nearly done a David Warner! He drops and runs, realises Alastair Cook isn't coming, and turns just as Peter Handscomb grabs the ball at short leg. Handscomb rushes his throw, though, and the ball misses as Malan thrusts his bat home. The two meet in the middle for a brief conflab, before they comfortably work a few singles.

Jack Spearing: This is probably the worst England team I've seen in past 13 years... I could bat longer than half of these... Cook's the only hope.
JJ: England seriously need to sort out their mental side of the game away from home. When they tour they are generally so so poor. At least the Aussies are collectively a team. England look like 11 blokes who have just met. No fighting spirit.
Malan 8, Cook 35
That's nice work from the newly reprieved Dawid Malan, shuffling down the crease and driving Nathan Lyon for a single. Shot! Oh, that's lovely from Cook! Lyon, again with the final ball of the over, drops a tad short, and Cook unleashes his arms and cuts him to the boundary.

The question is, what is "up market casual attire"?
England keep their review, but it's the only one they've got left after Mark Stoneman unsuccessfully reviewed his dismissal last night. Mitch Starc, looking a bit miffed, spears one into the pads, and Malan works his wrists to pick up a single. Alastair Cook then pushes the final ball of the over away in his ungainly fashion.
Missing. That ball is going over the top. As you were.
Dawid Malan is very deep in his crease there. He's been hit on the back leg, very high up...

It might go over the top. It looks high.
