This is the 10th time in 16 innings in 2017 that England have lost three or more wickets for less than 100 runs.

Pat Cummins is out of the attack after a very impressive hour's work. Mitch Starc is on for a quick blast.

There's a flag from my home town in the crowd! That's raised a smile on a miserable morning. Nathan Lyon is bowling to Alastair Cook, which is something we haven't seen in this series yet. He plays Lyon carefully, pushing forward with gentle hands, and he guides the ball past slip and away for a couple. Lyon guides one on to Cook's pads and he works a single, before Dawid Malan does the same.

England need a bit of a good fortune. Australia played and missed quite a bit - Anderson and Broad bowled some good balls without getting anything.

  6. Eng 62-3published at 20 overs

    Cummins 6-1-18-1

Pat Cummins continues, and Alastair Cook ignores a bouncy delivery, before he pokes the next two safely away. Cummins gets tired of this and goes for a shorter delivery that straightens and Cook, pushing forward, does well to not get a nick on it. The ball is going through very low to Tim Paine still, as he collects that one down by his ankles. Cook then works a single off the final ball of the over.

  8. Eng 61-3published at 19 overs

Dawid Malan has a look at the first ball before dancing down the pitch to the second. Nathan Lyon sees him coming and spears the ball in fuller and Malan shoves his bat forward and defends. Malan comes down the pitch again, although I'm not entirely sure he's picking the right balls to do it to as Lyon goes quicker, and Malan pokes it away. That's short from Lyon though and Malan cashes in, leaning back and cutting the ball away to the ropes.

The first bowling change for Australia, as Nathan Lyon is brought into the attack. There was turn and bounce for Moeen in England's innings, and Dawid Malan did not have a fun time of things against Lyon in Brisbane.

Vince's shot was a shocker, and Joe Root didn't have to drive. England must leave anything they don't have to play and make the bowlers bowl at them.

England have learned nothing from how Australia batted. It's as if they just go out and bat without thinking of the pitch or the situation.

  11. Eng 57-3published at 18 overs

Cummins has his hands on his head as he gets a delivery to bounce just over the top of Cook's stumps, before Cook goes for the big drive and just about avoids edging on to his stumps. Steve Smith, at slip, mimes playing the same shot in response.

Short, and Cook hooks, and hooks well! That's a better height for Cook to work with, pulling the ball down, and the ball bursts past the fielder at mid-wicket and away for four.

Sam Rao: Just the captain’s innings that England need.

Thomas Leonard: Don't want to sound defeatist but I'm slightly concerned if I drift off for a couple hours I'll wake up to Australia batting.

  13. Eng 53-3published at 17 overs

    Hazlewood 8-3-27-1

There's a wicket for all three of the Australia fast bowlers already, and we're 16 overs into this innings. Alastair Cook continues as he started as he tickles a delivery off his pads for an easy single, and Hazlewood grunts in frustration. He comes around the wicket to Dawid Malan and gets a lovely delivery to shape past the bat. Short goes Hazlewood and Malan goes after it, but again the ball gets big on him and he ends up flapping a lucky single towards cover. Cook then nurdles another one off the pads for good measure.

  15. Eng 50-3published at 16 overs

Australia's tails are so far up. Dawid Malan pushes forward and gets another thick outside edge, but this time it rolls along the ground to the slip cordon. There's definite movement there for Cummins, and he wanders off to bum pats galore from his team-mates.

  16. Postpublished at 03:31 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

Root stood at the crease for a couple of seconds after he nicked that. He couldn't believe what he'd just done. To be honest, either can I. He'd just hit a boundary but that was his tenth delivery and he went for the big, photogenic drive.

Dawid Malan is the next man in.

That's the length England should have been bowling. It just did a little bit and Root went after it.

England players are all going after the ball and they're giving soft wickets away. They need to let a few go by and get themselves in. Their heads are all over the place.

    Root c Bancroft b Cummins 9 (Eng 50-3)

    Ah.

That's bad from Joe Root. It's just another poor shot, played badly. He goes for the drive, Pat Cummins bowls the ball a little fuller, and an outside edge absolutely whizzes towards Cameron Bancroft at third slip. He snaffles it up, Cummins screeches in celebration and Australia gather around him in delight.

    Going well, this, for England.

Michael Vaughan has just told us that the last time Alastair Cook and Joe Root batted together with the pink ball, they put on 248 runs. That's the sort of thing England need.

  20. Eng 46-2published at 15 overs

Josh Hazlewood mixes things up to Cook, pushing a delivery across him, and Cook chases after it as the ball slides down leg. A play and a miss! That's lovely work from Hazlewood, pitching the ball up and enticing Cook into a drive. That ball's staying low, too, going through to Tim Paine at big toe height. Cook wanders off to short leg to have a chunter at himself. Maiden.
