Australia will indeed be batting again. Some more on Nathan Lyon - he's the leading wicket-taker in this series, and the leading Test wicket-taker of 2017.

There are just under 30 overs left in the day, if my maths is correct, and I suspect David Warner will really want to rub this match situation in England's face.

Craig Overton is the third Englishman to top score at number nine on debut. Charlie Absolom in 1879 against Australia at Melbourne made 52, and Jack Board made 29 against South Africa at the Wanderers in 1899.

A word for Craig Overton, who ends the innings unbeaten on 41. He's England's top scorer, he weathered some horrible short stuff from the Australia fast bowlers, and he showed real determination to try and get England over the follow-on target. He's done all he can.

Very much out. England's innings is over, bowled out for 227, trailing Australia by 215.

Judging by the speed with which Warner and Bancroft have gone haring off the pitch, Australia are going to bat again. Nathan Lyon leads the side off with figures of 4-60 to his name. A fine performance.

Anderson had got down on one knee to sweep and it's struck him on the thigh on the back leg...

I don't think Anderson has a great deal of hope here.

  7. England reviewpublished at 08:47 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

James Anderson has been given out lbw! I mean, that looks horribly out, but he's reviewed it anyway, because why not?

There's a strong rumour going round that the follow-on won't be enforced. Apparently Steve Smith's cousin's cat mentioned something to the scorers.

    Overton 41, Anderson 0

See? There's positives to this. Pat Cummins, arms and legs thumping up and down, comes in, and Craig Overton looks to work a quick single, before realising that it might not be wise to expose Anderson to the big quick. Australia offer him an easy single, David Warner just taking his tiem at mid-on to pick up a chip from Overton, but he's not biting. Oh! Now Overton goes down on one knee and wafts high above his head, and ends up connecting with fresh air. A maiden.

When England have had an eighth-wicket partnership of more than 65 in Australia in the last 40 years they have won the Ashes.

James Anderson has arrived at the crease, and he tries to shovel a delivery straight away for a couple. Lyon gets the ball to turn once again, and Anderson blocks the rest of the over out. A wicket maiden for the spinner, who now has three wickets.

If he'd have played it with a straight bat, he wouldn't have nicked it. Yet another left-hander to come in. England will have to have a little think about these left-handers: either split them up or get some right-handers in because Lyon has them on toast.

    Broad c Paine b Lyon 3 (Eng 227-9)

    Gone!

Stuart Broad doesn't really need to be playing at that from Nathan Lyon, but he gets one to rise and turn on Broad. There's the tiniest of edges and Paine, up to the stumps, doesn't miss a beat. Broad nods his head in acknowledgement and wanders off. He played that with a rather crooked bat

I've really been impressed with Overton. He was in the melting pot when he came in, but he got in and he has stuck it out. England's batsman should be looking at him. With a bit of application, it can be done.

    Need 16to avoid follow-on

The first ball is indeed short, slanted across Broad, and he manages to avoid it. He wears the second one, though. Broad has layers of padding on but he's turned away from that delivery, his head pointing towards the keeper, and he's struck on the chest guard. Oh, has Broad been caught? He fends at a short ball, misses and Cameron Bancroft at short leg take a super leaping catch. There's no bat on it from Broad, though. His chest guard is doing some fine work at the minute. A very awkward flick of the wrists gets Broad off strike, before a leading Overton edge reaps another run.

England simply have had no momentum in this series. Once a team get on a roll in Australia they are very hard to stop.

A paddle sweep from Stuart Broad brings the first runs after the break, as he pops the ball over his shoulder and safely away for one. Shot! That's a fine thwack from Craig Overton. A shimmy down the pitch and he drives Lyon back down the ground for four. He's now England's top scorer in this innings, which says a lot. What a debut he's having.

Ta, Matt. Stuart Broad and Craig Overton are out in the middle. It'll be Nathan Lyon to resume after dinner.

England are going to be all out under the lights, but if I were Steve Smith, I'd bat again. Do what England used to do to teams at home when they'd bowled them out cheaply. Keep on batting. Nobody loves a bruising a team in the second innings with the bat like David Warner does.

For those of you just waking up, you've missed yet another England top order collapse.

James Vince was dismissed in the second over of the day and England also lost captain Joe Root (9), Dawid Malan (19) and Alastair Cook (37) in that first session.

After the tea interval Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow both fell in quick succession and that left England 142-7 until a partnership of 66 between Chris Woakes and Craig Overton saved face a little.

But Woakes fell to Mitchell Starc for 36 shortly before dinner meaning it is now up to Overton, who resumes on 36 not out, and Stuart Broad to take England to the follow-on mark and beyond with just James Anderson to come.
