  1. Eng 54-1published at 23 overs

    Stoneman 36, Vince 1

A third slip is now in place to James Vince. The Aussies know where his weakness is. There are 25 minutes until dinner. England's number three surely has to put that off drives away for now. England have scored just 15 runs in the last 10 overs. Another maiden. Tense.

That's the seventh time Nathan Lyon has got Alastair Cook out in Tests. He averages 19.7 against him.

    Target 354

James Vince's ends the run of two back-to-back maidens as he gets off the mark with a single. Wowsers. Now that's a brutal delivery from Nathan Lyon. Big spin and big bounce but it misses Stoneman's edge and hits wicketkeeper Tim Paine in the chest. Lyon was leaping three feet in the air there as the ball went past Stoneman. How did that not get a wicket?

  5. Eng 53-1published at 21 overs

    Target 354

England desperately need Stoneman and Vince to dig in like they did in the first innings at Brisbane. Tuffers is not happy with the ball tracking on that review. He says the ball was going down leg.

Calm down, Mark. Calm down. England have just lost a wicket and now Stoneman wafts outside off stump. He gets away with it, though. There's no edge.

And with that, the Aussies inside the Adelaide Oval breathe a huge sigh of relief. The tension beforehand was nothing like the suspense of the review, followed by a huge roar. Nathan Lyon again. He'll by prime minister by the end of this series.

I'm interested in how James Vince is going to come out and play. He's got to give himself a chance and back his technique to let himself survive for half an hour.

  9. Eng 53-1published at 20 overs

A massive blow for England as Nathan Lyon does for Alastair Cook. The TMS team were convinced that was not out at first glance and I must say I agreed. It didn't look right but the decision stands.

James Vince survives his first ball. The good news is he's a right-hander. Lyon has been tearing through the England lefties for fun.

Cook lbw Lyon 16 (Eng 53-1)

Gone! The review works this time for Australia. It pitched on leg stump and ball-tracking shows the ball to be straightening and hitting the stumps. I think Cook was a little surprised at that. The Australians are unsurprisingly delighted/relieved. They all hug Nathan Lyon. A massive breakthrough.

The only worry for Cook is that he fell over.

  14. Australia reviewpublished at 19.5 overs

Alastair Cook would have been out earlier had Australia reviewed and the Steve Smith isn't going to take that chance again. Nathan Lyon hits him on the pads and there's a big appeal but a shake of the head. This is close...

  16. Eng 52-0published at 19 overs

    Cook 16, Stoneman 36

Now another ball beats the outside edge. This time it is Alastair Cook who gets away with a nervy prod to Josh Hazlewood. The run rate was up at 4.50 earlier in the innings but now Hazlewood and Lyon are really tightening things up. Just a single from this latest over.

  17. What have you missed?published at 07:07 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2017

A day which will have cheered England fans and the neutrals.

Resuming on 53-4, Australia were bowled out for 138 as the superb James Anderson finished with 5-43, his first five-wicket haul in Tests in Australia. Chris Woakes chipped in with 4-36 to continue a remarkable England fightback.

It left England chasing 354, which would be their highest successful Test chase and the 10th highest by any team in Test history. While that remains unlikely, England's prospects are significantly brighter than they were when they conceded a first-innings deficit of 215.

Alastair Cook and Mark Stoneman have just brought up the fifty partnership, their first of the series. So far, so good.

Australia are buzzing around in the field. They've just started upping their energy levels. England have to be careful here.

  19. Eng 52-0published at 18 overs

    Target 354

It's really hard to tell on those replays whether that carried to Josh Hazlewood. Mark Stoneman will definitely have been worried for a while. He now almost chops on to his stumps a couple of balls later but survives... just. Australia are making things happen again.

I don't think that quite got to Hazlewood. Stoneman just helped it around the corner. It was a difficult chance for a big man coming in.
