It comes down to this next session. England have got to understand that they're not going to score too many runs in this session. The main thing is to not lose any wickets.

How many wickets can England afford to lose in the final session if they are to get something from this game?

One? None at all? It's going to be a brilliant watch.

They're just about still in this.

It's a nice 40-minute break for England now. They've got to go out there and sell their wicket dear. Sometimes the ball can do too much. Watchful, leave well... it's going to be tough.

  5. Dinner - Eng 68-2published at 28 overs

    Target 354

Root and Vince survive as the latter knocks Starc down the ground for three runs. Momentum is a funny thing. A pretty even session but with those wickets coming in the final hour, Australia will be happier.

England will sit and have their tea now knowing they'll be facing the Aussie quicks under the lights afterwards...

    Target 354

Joe Root is not going to stop driving through the off side. So much danger in this shot as he gets a thick-ish edge to the backward point fielder. "Got to leave those," says Tuffers and I agree.

Push and run. Better. Root drops one on the off side and, despite taking a while to get going, Vince makes his ground for a single.

Two balls to go until the break...

  7. Eng 64-2published at 27 overs

    Vince 5, Root 6

Nathan Lyon is back. Can he cause the same trouble to the right-handed Vince and Root as he did to left-handed Cook and Stoneman? Vince is on the front foot, blocking away, with three men for company around the bat. Lyon has one wicket for six runs from eight overs. The next over will be the last before the dinner break...

  8. Eng 64-2published at 26 overs

    Target 354

Joe, Joe, Joe. Be careful. Full and wide from Mitchell Starc and Root drives again. It's in the air but flies through a gap and through backward point for four. Root chuckles as he walks down the pitch to punch gloves with Vince. I'm not laughing. I think my heart stopped momentarily there.

I'd like to see England split up the two left-handers, Moeen and Malan, and put Bairstow in instead. If they do it breaks Lyon's rhythm up.

    Need 294 to win

Can we wind back to the drinks break during this session? England were cruising along with Cook and Stoneman at the crease, sharing a 53-run opening stand. Now the pressure is right on Joe Root as Hazlewood tries to arrow the ball at his pads again. The Aussie crowd love this. Hazlewood misses James Vince's helmet by a mater of centimetres with a ferocious bouncer. The bowler licks his lips.

Good response from Vince. Over-pitched from Hazlewood and the batsman drives for four.

  13. What have you missed?published at 07:35 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2017

In short: more fight from England with the ball; the raising of hope after a promising start with the bat; then a reality check with the loss of two quick wickets.

That England even have a sniff of victory - however unlikely - owes much to James Anderson and Chris Woakes, who took 5-43 and 4-36 to dismiss Australia for 138. Craig Overton took the final wicket as well as a very smart catch.

England will make history if they chase 354 - it would be their highest successful fourth-innings chase in Tests and the 10th highest by any team.

Hopes were raised by a half-century opening stand, only for Alastair Cook to fall lbw to Nathan Lyon on review and Mark Stoneman to guide Mitchell Starc to gully.

England have been stuck around 50 for a while but a single for Joe Root takes the runs required below 300. These two have to make it to dinner for England don't they?

Australia have realised they needed to go back to bowling some maidens after England got off to a fast start. How big a knock is this for Root?

  16. Postpublished at 07:34 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2017

Out strides England captain Joe Root. A HUGE knock for the skipper.

What a great time for Australia to get the break through. It didn't bounce that much, Stoneman just guided it to gully. I thought Stoneman played well and showed he's got the appetite for the fight. He'll be desperately disappointed.

    The change works...

That's pretty poor from Mark Stoneman and England are well and truly wobbling. He doesn't need to play and ends up just guiding the ball to gully off Mitchell Starc. A punch of the air from Starc. Stoneman closes his eyes and rocks his head back.

  19. Postpublished at 07:29 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2017

I assume this means a change of ends for Nathan Lyon. Mitchell Starc is replacing him in the Aussie attack. Starc went for 20 in his four overs earlier.

Australia will have good sessions. They will get the ball to turn. England just have to sit there, take the scoreboard out of the equation and play every ball on its merits. These two have to be here at dinner.
