Ian Russell‏: Momentum - huge in Test cricket. If England can get to 100 without loss the pressure will build on the Aussies and this will get very interesting.

Stephen Hoffman‏: Touching every single wooden table I have in my house clearly worked.

It's a slim chance, but there's a chance of winning .England have to bat out of their skins. They have to forget about the total. They have to bat to drinks, and then from drinks, bat to dinner. Don't get ahead of yourself.

    Cook 10, Stoneman 28

Good cricket from Mark Stoneman. He plays calmly into the off side, takes one and then rushes through for a second run. He's not scared of facing Lyon with plenty of spin on offer. There are plenty of gasps from behind the stumps but Stoneman starts solidly to the off-spinner. Each defensive stroke finds the middle of the bat.

Lyon gives him a glare but that was encouraging for England.

The spinners wants to bowl before the batsman has got in; before he has got runs; before his confidence is high.

    Target 354

Oooooo. Did that keep low? Pat Cummins replaces the expensive Starc and almost sneaks one under the bat for Cook. I'm worried about the amount of positivity on #bbccricket. This wasn't expected.

Cummins starts with a maiden which is much needed for Australia. It's going to be a double change of bowling. Nathan Lyon is coming into the attack in the 10th over. Two left-handers are at the crease. Important period coming up.

Dare I say it, England have not been in a better position in the match than this. There is the threat of Lyon, though, with England's six left-handers.

    Target 354

    This is getting silly!

Two more boundaries for England! It is only eight overs but this is a very positive start. Stoneman's first four of the over is a little streaky, running down through between slip and gully, but his second is a beautiful punch down the ground through mid-on.

England are rocketing along at 4.50 runs per over.

  10. Eng 28-0published at 7.3 overs

A fifth boundary! Another pull from Cook and again it is swatted through the leg side to the fence. That was quick out of the hand from Hazlewood but didn't get up above chest height meaning Cook was comfortable.

The aeroplanes get a pretty decent view of the Adelaide Oval. Trust me, that one is quite low.

  12. Eng 22-0published at 7 overs

    Cook 5, Stoneman 17

Watchful from Cook for the rest of the over. Much more threatening from Starc as he goes very full and on the stumps but England's former skipper gets his toes out of the way and digs the ball out.

Nathan Lyon is doing a few stretches in the outfield. Could we see him into the attack early?

Rachel T‏: If we can get that target under 300 without losing a wicket, then Australia will start to sweat a bit. And that will feel like a victory in itself.

Julian Prior‏: Really enjoying sledging Mitchell Starc from my armchair.

    Target 354

Starc isn't quite getting it right. Short from the left-arm quick and Alastair Cook rocks back in classic Cook style and pulls the ball through square leg for four more.

Who's getting carried away with this start?

"It's the hope that kills you," says a colleague as he makes his way into the office. That last over from Stoneman definitely released the early pressure after that Cook reprieve. Josh Hazlewood has made a very tight start here. Five dots start his third over before Stoneman drives through the covers for two off the final ball. They're the first runs to come from Hazlewood's bowling so far.

Mitchell Starc is just drifting on to leg stump. He needs to get it on to off stump - that's where his field is set.

  18. Eng 16-0published at 5 overs

    Cook 1, Stoneman 15

First runs for Mark Stoneman. Starc goes in search of that full straight delivery that did for him in the first innings but this time the batsman hits it right out of the middle to the mid-wicket fence.

And again! Same shot, this one worryingly in the air, to a very similar spot on the boundary. Make that three! That's the best shot of the lot. All along the ground from Stoneman as Starc again drifted onto leg stump. Three more to Stoneman on the final ball means 15 runs come off the over! England off to a flier.

  19. What have you missed?published at 06:07 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2017

If you're just waking up, then I can bring you good news of sorts.

England have bowled Australia out for 138, but they need a mammoth 354 to win this second Test.

Australia resumed on 53-4 but lost wickets regularly as England found a better line and length - highly frustrating for those who saw them bowl on the first two days.

James Anderson claimed his first Test five-for in Australia, dismissing Peter Handscomb, nightwatchman Nathan Lyon and Mitch Starc today to finish with figures of 5-43.

Chris Woakes also backed up his performance last night with 4-36, while Craig Overton claimed the final wicket of the day.

Alastair Cook and Mark Stoneman have begun England's reply, and Cook has been handed a lifeline after Australia decided not to review an lbw that would have been clattering into leg stump.

Cook has to make the most of that reprieve. Why didn't the Aussies review? It's Alastair Cook. Perhaps because it was so early in the innings? They must have thought it was going down the leg side and would only have been umpire's call at best. England's former captain is circumspect for the rest of the over. That's wise.
