Another fine bouncer from Cummins comes Malan's way, the ball angled in and pushed right across Root's body, and he throws his head out of the way as the ball goes through to Tim Paine. This is good from Cummins. The ball is coming in to Malan's body, stopping him from working the ball away, while Root and umpire Gaffaney have a lengthy chat at the other end. Cummins sets him up for the full ball that swings in and Malan sees ti well, knocking it away from his pads as he sees off a maiden.

England have got to think in terms of overs. If they can make it to tomorrow, who knows what can happen. If two or three wickets fall now, the game is up.

  3. Eng 103-3published at 39 overs

    Target 354

Down on one knee goes Root and he sweeps Lyon away comfortably for a single. Malan falls over slightly as he helps a fuller ball off his pads, which gives Lyon food for thought. He was playing across the line, and Lyon keeps him watchful with another delivery that just turns underneath Malan's nose. Malan shuffles out of his crease to tap the final ball of the over away for a single.

Rich Kisbee: What a review that is... dangerous game if you don't offer a shot!

Iain Warburton: World class leave from Root.

Thomas Knights: I know umpiring is not an easy job, but alarming how they have got nearly every lbw decision wrong this Test match.

  5. Eng 101-3published at 38 overs

Aleem Dar's not had a great Test match. Pat Cummins continues and Dawid Malan lets a ball shape over his stumps, before he gets Malan to play and miss at a tempter outside off stump. Joe Root is wandering around at the non striker's end, constantly talking away to himself. A thick outside edge is well fielded by a darting fielder, and Malan has to settle for a maiden.

You can't particularly blame the umpire for giving that.

These reviews keep amazing me! There must be some springy bounce in this pitch. He was slap bang in front of middle stump.

It's going over! Joe Root survives! England suddenly love DRS again!

I honestly don't know what Root was doing there. He shuffled back into his crease, offered absolutely no shot and Lyon cannoned the ball into his pads. Can't be leaving them.

Umpire Dar raised the finger pretty quickly...it's struck Root quite high up, and he's quite far back.

Nathan Lyon still looks the main threat here. Dawid Malan gets off the mark before Lyon gives Root some real grief, getting deliveries to turn and bounce up on Root, who just about manages to shovel the ball short of David Warner at leg slip. Lyon drops short and Root cashes in, taking a step back and then jumping to muscle the ball over mid-wicket for four.

Christian Reilly: Vince had no absolutely no reason to play that shot. Another rush of blood that will cost us the game now. Needless.

Joe Seath: In what world is James Vince a Test match number three? Selectors to blame.

Mike Jones: Another shocking shot from Vince. Time for Hales?

Here's Pat Cummins. Ooh, and there goes Pat Cummins! That's a lovely cover drive from Root. It's a similar shot to the one that caused his downfall in the first innings but he's nailed that, his head and his weight balanced nicely to work it away. Root knocks a half volley away from his toes, before Cummins does incredibly well to field a straight drive from Root in his follow through. He got down quick for a big fella. An inside edge off a drive brings yeps from the Australian fielders, before Cummins bangs in a fiery bouncer.

Australia has not seen the best of Joe Root. He's had a lot of low scores - they don't quite believe in him here. It's a great thing if you can earn the respect of Australia crowds.

There was a big cloud of dust as that last delivery from Mitch Starc hit the pitch. What a rubbish way for James Vince to get out, especially after his first innings. Starc bowled that deliberately wide to tempt him, and he fell for it. Anyway, Dawid Malan is the new man in. He watches Root block four balls from Nathan Lyon before they exchange a quick single. Lyon fiddles with his field and then gets a corker to rise and turn past Malan's outside edge.

That is giving it away. That is why he’s going to struggle in Tests. It didn’t swing, it didn’t seam - that is a give-away wicket. I would be saying in the dressing room, “what are you doing, having a dart at that?”

That's such a bad shot from James Vince.

In news that probably won't surprise most of you, Vince has been caught at slip after going for a big cover drive. He chases a delivery that Mitch Starc deliberately spears full and wide, and the edge goes flying to Handscomb at first slip. Handscomb judges it well but dearie me.

Lyon is posing problems with this round-the-wicket line to the right-handers. He's bowling well and looking dangerous.

  20. Eng 90-2published at 33 overs

I wish Tim Paine came with a mute button. I'm fine with wicket-keepers making some noise, but not constantly, and at such a high pitch. Joe Root comes down to Nathan Lyon but the fielder at mid-wicket cuts the ball off, before David Warner takes a blinding catch off Root's thigh pad. Lyon repeats the delivery to the same effect - the ball goes down towards Warner and through his leg, and Root jogs through for a leg bye.
