Usman Khawaja speaking on BT Sport about his dismissal: "I thought it was a bit high but once the umpire gives it out, it's hard to overturn. I was confirming with Smith that it was maybe high and outside the line."

On batting with Steve Smith: "Smith and I have played with each other for a long time, from growing up in New South Wales to now. We don't need to say too much to each other to communicate."

On England's collapse: "Malan and Bairstow batted beautifully. They started well this morning. It could have been a lot worse for us. We've bowled really well to the tail over the last three games and we continued it today."

I can see England getting bowled out for 200 in the second innings. So if Australia get a lead of 80 in the first innings, they will win.

England's Jonny Bairstow, who made 119, on BT Sport: "I'm delighted to get my first Ashes hundred It's something as a boy I've wanted to do. To get it at the Waca makes it more special."

On his 'headbutt' celebration: "It was just a bit of light fun."

Damien Shortt: England surely ahead...just. Australia will need to bat for another 100 overs to apply some real scoreboard pressure in the third innings. Can't see that happening.

England needed Broad to be more effective in this game. He has looked innocuous. That is a concern. You need the tall bowlers on this pitch. Broad, for me, is the man who has to do it tomorrow.

  6. England 'happy so far'published at 10:27 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2017

Jonny Bairstow on TMS: "We've got 400 on the board. From 100-4, we could have been out for a lot less than that. For us to get 400 from that position was a great effort from the guys.

"We're happy so far. Tomorrow the first couple of sessions are massive for us. There's no reason why we can't come out and take a couple of wickets. If we can take a lead into that second innings, who knows what can happen down the line?"

Today was a special day for Jonny Bairstow. He's been up against it in this series, what with the headbutt that wasn't and then the on-field verbals afterwards. Today was a day to look back on fondly.

That was Jonny Bairstow's best Test innings. He ducked and swayed away from the short stuff and had so much balance on the front foot. It was as good as I have seen him.

England bowled too short again - especially Chris Woakes. He's struggling on this tour. England have to take every chance they get tomorrow. Concentration is key.

England's Jonny Bairstow, who made 119, on BT Sport: "We could have kicked on and got a few more than that. It's tough for the guys down the order; it's pretty ruthless."

On his dismissal, bowled playing across the line to Mitchell Starc: "It's about risk and reward, and I didn't end up being on the right side for myself today."

An update on Craig Overton: he jarred the rib that he was struck on during the Adelaide Test.

After two days I would still rather be in England's position. There are cracks in the pitch, a few have kept low. Is there enough belief in the dressing room that they can take chances? They won't bowl Australia out for much of a lead at all.

Steve Smith has 92 and he played with a cigar in his mouth. He could go really big. History tells you that the third innings is important. If the scores are pretty much level then England's batsmen have to be positive .

England dropped three chances which could have been taken. They have to hold on to everything and bat positively.

Charles Davie: Can't help but feel Steve Smith is walking (sprinting?) his way into one of the all-time greats category. An average of 61.40 from 108 innings. Pure class.

Happy to Be Tommy: Whilst one of the ugliest willow wielders to play cricket you have to admire Steve Smith's work ethic. When he played for Sevenoaks he was fairly average as a club cricketer.

Steve Smith has been at the crease for 122 balls, and I reckon he looked like getting out to about one of them. He's booking himself in for a big score tomorrow. Interestingly, there's rain and thunderstorms forecast in Perth for Sunday and Monday, which is nothing something you expect to see in Perth.

I thoroughly enjoyed Jonny Bairstow's century this morning. He and Malan put on 237 runs for England. The rest of the line up managed 161 runs between them. That's a worry for England - Root, Cook, Vince need to contribute more.

England should have scored at least 450 but we have a tail which keeps on getting blown away. The fact is that they get out. Jonny Bairstow got out trying to get runs because he has no confidence in his tail.

As soon as Dawid Malan got out, it opened up an end and we folded. Another 50 runs was needed.

Craig Overton was the pick of England's bowlers, although that potential side strain is a worry. He was back on the field by the end of the day, though. James Andesron has been economical but he's gone wicketless, while Broad's iffy tour with the ball continues.

I would say it was Australia's day, yes, not overwhelmingly though. They are points ahead but they are still 200 behind. A lot can happen. Some of their batsmen aren't too clever. If Steve Smith bats on they will get to 400 easily.
