  1. Aus 184-3published at 54 overs

    Smith 84, Marsh 0

Tom's huffing at that, Terry. Steve Smith continues on his merry way as he turns his wrists on a leggy delivery from Chris Woakes, threading it through the field. In fact, he doesn't even bother to run. He just takes a step down the wicket and watches the ball beat two fielders on its way to the boundary.

Terry Mahoney: Looking at the live text after a wee while and there's a wicket. Stay on it, Amy, just stay on it. Don't let Tom back in that seat.

  3. Aus 180-3published at 53 overs

Steve Smith grunts as he defends his first ball from Anderson, a full delivery that shapes in to his pads. There's a spring in England's step now as Stuart Broad does a forward roll to stop a Smith drive racing away to the boundary, before James Vince does a similar move. Smith forces a run off the back foot to take him to 80.

Let's not forget that Australia are still 200 behind, and their batting is not that great either, apart from Steve Smith.

Shaun Marsh is a poor starter - throw your best bowlers on.

James Anderson is back on, presumably to try and wrangle Shaun Marsh out. He's got Steve Smith to contend with first, though.

They tell me that on Sunday and Monday there will be thunderstorms, with talk of three months' worth of rain coming on Sunday!

That's about 15mm apparently. I've never seen it rain in Perth once! I'll be amazed.

Looking at the replay, Khawaja's feet barely moved. He just stood and moved his bat at the last second.

Shaun Marsh is welcomed to the crease by Chris Woakes with a delivery that squares him up, his wrists and feet getting crossed over one another. Woakes finishes off the over with a hopeful yelp for lbw, which would have been close, had Marsh not hit it.

Shaun Marsh has arrived at the crease. There are 11.5 overs left in the day. Can England snaffle another late wicket?

This is poor from Steve Smith. That's dissent. Smith has been watching the big screen, he has seen the wiggle on Snicko and he thinks there's an inside edge. England look amazed that they have got a wicket. That has come from nothing.

Khawaja lbw Woakes 50 (Aus 179-3)

Umpire's call! That is out, by the finest of margins!

The impact was umpire's call, the ball was clipping the very top of the stumps, but it's out nonetheless. Steve Smith is thoroughly unimpressed. As soon as he saw it was out, he whacked his bat into his pads.

Still, a much-needed breakthrough for England.

Aleem Dar is looking at this from every available angle. There's a bit of a woody noise as Khawaja pushes forward, and there's a spike on Snicko, but no mark on Hotspot. Looks to me as though the ball brushes the front pad and, after an age, Dar agrees.

It's hit Khawaja on the back thigh, above the pad. Smith shook his head in annoyance at that decision just after Khawaja reviewed. Not sure he thinks it's out.

  13. Aus 179-2published at 51.1 overs

Usman Khawaja has been given out lbw! Steve Smith tells him to review it, and he does.

    That looked high...

  14. 50 runs

    Aus 179-2

A drive into the covers fromr Usman Khawaja, and that allows him to jog through to reach his half-century. He raises his bat to an appreciative crowd. His half-century has come from 122 balls. It's not been particularly fluent, but the freedom with which Smith has played has stopped Khawaja, at the other end, from getting bogged down. England's shoulders just slump a little bit further.

  15. Aus 178-2published at 50.4 overs

Four! A late cut from Steve Smith, guiding the ball past slip and keeper, and the ball goes haring across the outfield. He's got to 78 in almost no time at all, and he's not played any real extravagant shots. It's been an innings all about timing.

Spraying the crowd with water to cool them down. It looks like he's modified a tool used for killing weeds. Maybe fill it with beer instead?

  18. Aus 173-2published at 50 overs

    Khawaja 49, Smith 74

Broad has taken five wickets in this series so far for 209 runs. He's also been hit for six in similarly dismissive fashion by both Shaun Marsh and Steve Smith.

Chris Woakes replaces the broken Craig Overton, and gets Khawaja to fall over himself as he strikes him low on the bat. Khawaja shuffles back into his crease and reads a Woakes slower ball at the last second, jabbing his bat down and drawing ooh's from the fielders lurking nearby. A maiden.

Moeen is on to twirl his arm over. He drops short and Smith leans back and carves him away for a couple. Smith then times the pants off a ping on his pads, flicking the ball past short leg and away. Bairstow tries to gee Moeen up but it's very quiet out there.
