Two sparkling centuries from England in the past two days but they'll be kicking themselves for that collapse today. It was the speed with which the wickets went down - six batsmen gone in nine frenetic overs. Still, 403 is a good score, albeit not as good as it should have been. There's the sense, though, that Steve Smith is going to go big tomorrow.

    Solid defence from Shaun Marsh.

And that, folks, is that. Steve Smith and Shaun Marsh trudge off, with a not too cheerful looking England trooping behind them. I'd have that as Australia's day.

  3. Aus 203-3published at 61.5 overs

A clipped single from the penultimate ball of the day means that Steve Smith ends this second day unbeaten on 92. Shaun Marsh will deal with the final delivery from Broad.

  4. Aus 202-3published at 61.3 overs

Stuart Broad whistles one down at 88mph and Steve Smith, slightly surprised by the bounce, gets his gloves out of the way. Broad then goes even shorter, and Smith yanks his head, bat and body out of harm's way.

Baby update from hospital. Still not here yet but unfortunately wife not keen on the name Craig ("5 wickets or not"). However she likes the name "Stephen" (after her father) but if Smith gets a ton then I'm using my veto.

Moeen whirls through a relatively nonthreatening over as quickly as he can. Shaun Marsh doesn't indulge in any time-wasting antics either, which means England are going to sneak one last over in. It'll be Steve Smith, on 91, to face up to it.

  7. Aus 201-3published at 60 overs

    Smith 90, Marsh 7

Looking at that dropped catch, I reckon Bairstow might have put Stoneman off there. They both got in each other's way, arms getting tangled together, and Stoneman looked to get fingertips on it.

Meanwhile Steve Smith, looking utterly untroubled, drives and tears down the wicket for a single. That'll keep him on strike for the next Moeen over.

To back up Geoffrey's point about pace in Australia, the visiting bowler with the most wickets in Australia is Curtly Ambrose. He took 78 at 19.

  9. dropped catch

Marsh dropped on 7published at 59 overs

    Aus 200-3

Is that a drop? Shaun Marsh plays one down on to Mark Stoneman's boot, Jonny Bairstow comes around from behind the stumps, both players dive, a hand outstretched - and the ball falls between them! One of them should have clung on to that, I reckon. Root knows it as well, burying his chin in his hand at slip.

A tough chance, but a chance nevertheless.

Here's Moeen. Ricky Ponting, meanwhile, is havign England as being slightly in front.

The real question now is can Steve Smith get to three figures before the close?

He's making hay in this over, working successive Broad deliveries away, while Broad covers his mouth and stares at the fielder in the deep. A lovely drive from Shaun Marsh, turning his wrists to work the ball off his pads, takes Australia to the 200 mark. Craig Overton, meanwhile, is back on the field, which is encouraging for England.

Let's try and get gruntled to be the 2018 word of the year.

Stuart Broad is back on, with 15 minutes remaining.

Brian in Ipswich - disgruntled is what is known as an unpaired word. Other unpaired words include innocuous, nonplussed and inert. Just saying.

You do but only in PG Woodhouse. Grammatically, 'gruntled' is known as a lost positive.

    Smith 86, Marsh 4

Shaun Marsh is off the mark with a boundary! Not a convincing one, mind, as he throws a lacklustre drive at James Anderson and gets a thick outside edge that beats the slips and tears along the Waca outfield. Marsh aims a straight drive back past Anderson, but he sticks a mitt out and clutches the ball.

I’ve just put one English pound on Steven Smith hitting a ton. With my betting history, this will hopefully be the best pound I have ever lost.

I wonder if there's anything that Steve Smith's bad at. Cooking, or something. Just something to make us all feel better.

He pats a leisurely single away to begin a new Chris Woakes over, before Woakes serves up four leg byes in an act of friendship. Marsh has yet to get off the mark, and he goes falling over to the side as he tries to work Woakes through mid-wicket.

Once the ball gets older it doesn't do anything. Australia couldn't do anything with it and they've got real pace.

England can't take a clatter of wickets. We have goodish bowlers but they are English bowlers who can swing the ball in England. Let's be honest.

Shaun Marsh takes a stroll over to short leg as James Anderson gets a few deliveries to shape over his stumps. Anderson forces him to play, enticing a drive out of Marsh, but the ball rolls all along the ground. It keeps Marsh the elder on 0, however...
