  1. Aus 449-4published at 121 overs

    Lead by 46

Another crunching drive from Mitch Marsh is cut off on the boundary, before he and Steve Smith work singles off Craig Overton. Smith has had four play and misses in his entire innings. Four! He's faced 286 deliveries. Ridiculous.

The 200 partnership, the latest in a long line of cracking achievements for this pair, comes up with a Mitch Marsh tickle for three. This is clever from Australia, rotating the strike, not allowing Overton to settle.

  3. Aus 442-4published at 120 overs

    M Marsh 112, Smith 191

Mitch Marsh cracks another drive. James Anderson dives for the ball after it's already burst through him and away to the boundary. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow stand side by side, arms folded, staring at the ball as Marsh and Smith have a natter in the middle.

Anderson then jogs across to pick up the ball to return it to Bairstow, and gets jeered by the crowd for his troubles.

The only player I can see who is jogging up to people between overs and talking to everyone is Joe Root. He looks marooned. Nobody is helping him out. Where are the senior players?

What would it mean to Craig Overton if at the end of this over Alastair Cook ran 40 yards over to him and said 'you're a lion heart mate, bowling with a cracked rib. It means so much to us, keep going.' Let's see if anyone does that.

  6. Aus 437-4published at 119 overs

    Lead by 34

That's fine running from Steve Smith and Mitch Marsh, darting through for a couple. Oh, and that's four! Craig Overton really bends his back on a bouncer but Marsh sees it quickly, and he has plenty of time to pummel it through mid-wicket for a boundary.

A delightful looking cover drive draws coos of delight from the crowd, but James Vince ruins their fun by fielding it and preventing a run.

Another easy boundary for Steve Smith as he turns his wrists on a Moeen delivery, and the ball races away for four. Silence from the England players. Not even a shout of encouragement for Moeen from, the normally chatter friendly Jonny Bairstow.

    Flat. So very flat.

  10. Aus 425-4published at 117 overs

Craig Overton is on to bowl and, after two balls, he slows down on his way back to his mark and has a quick feel of that left side. He whistles down a fine bouncer that Smith loses sight of, as he ducks and yanks his head back at the last second. Smith stares at the pitch and mimes the bounce of the ball, before tapping a single from the final ball of the over.

Moeen is going to start the afternoon session. Steve Smith pushes an easy single almost straight away, before Mitch Marsh leans back and cracks a couple away.

Next man in Mitch Starc is watching on from the dressing room. He'll have a rash from wearing those pads for so long.

A few England players come running down the steps after tea. The rest follow a little more slowly.

Here come Steve Smith and Mitch Marsh. Both will be looking to double up.

England have confirmed that Craig Overton has a hairline crack in his rib. So he's been bowling with that injury all day. Some effort.

There was an air of inevitability about what has happened today. From about an hour from the end of play last night, there was an air of resignation about England. I heard that players arrived back in the dressing room pretty gloomy.

Did England really believe in themselves today? All the signs are they haven't.

Honestly, England's best chance of getting someone out now is hoping that they have too many snacks at tea and get dreadful indigestion.
