No-one has taught Bradman's style of batting. That's odd. In golf, tennis, you copy the great players. But no-one has. Yet in Smith, I see a bit of that. He's very much like Bradman at the minute - he's whacking our bowling around.

  4. On Smith's techniquepublished at 04:42 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

Warren Craig, Steve Smith's manager, on criticism of the batsman's unorthodox technique: "He doesn’t worry about that. He very much focuses on what works for him.

"It’s not a question of you should do it this way or do it that way. He’s very clear on his game and he sticks with it. He will listen to coaches and think about what they said, but ultimately he will go with what he thinks works best for him."

If you watch Smith, he stands like a modern batsman, with the bat in the air. Just before the bowler gets to delivery point, the bat, with Smith's wrists, points to gully, then, like Bradman, it goes around and down in a rotary action. I don't know how the hell he worked it out. It's his own style. It works for him, and it works brilliantly.

Most of us batsmen are taught by the MCC coaching manual. Donald Bradman had a different technique, picked up from living out in the outback. He had to make a game of cricket for himself. He had a rubber golf ball and a cricket stump. He spent hours and hours trying to hit that ball to different areas.

  9. 'He's a normal Aussie bloke who loves his dog'published at 04:39 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

Steve Smith's manager, Warren Craig: "I’ve looked after Steve since he was 18.

"Steve’s just your typical Australian lad. There are no airs or graces about him – he’s what you find from a normal Aussie bloke.

"He’s one of those guys that just loves cricket. He eats, breathes cricket.

"He’s a very relaxed sort of guy. When he gets some time off. He loves to spend that at home, with his fiancée and their little dog, Charlie, which he absolutely adores."

We have no idea how to get Steve Smith out, England don't seem to either, but here's a man who may do.

His manager, Warren Craig, is the lunchtime guest on TMS. Cut us a deal Warren...

Australia have done what England did when Malan and Bairstow were together. England's bowlers have toiled. They've given everything. It's done nothing.

Australia score at over four an over, losing just one wicket in the process as they cut the England lead to 89.

You start to turn your attention to just how big a first-innings lead the hosts may have now...

    Sign that snapper up!

Lest we forget, England were 368-4. You just can't see a collapse of similar proportions coming for the Aussie batsmen though can you?Nope.

Mitch Marsh is going to get to 50 in the next over or so, the way this is going. He smashes Stuart Broad to the square boundary. Broad is having a miserable time of it out there. Like me Christmas shopping.

Since they've taken the new ball, there's been a splurge of runs. They've gone at six an over since they took it.

  18. Aus 310-4published at 88 overs

    Smith 137, M Marsh 35

Runs are flowing now, Australia go past 300 and cut the lead to under 100. The only person troubled by the English bowling at the moment is the cameraman, who keeps missing the flight of the ball.

Chris Woakes bowls on leg stump and is carted around by Mitch Marsh. FOURTEEN off that over!

Stuart Broad is back on, England are fishing for anything out there right now. A strangled appeal as Broad goes straight to Mitch Marsh, there's bat on that though.

Has ANYONE got an idea how to get Steve Smith out? Set up an ipad behind the stumps with some really, really bad music?
