Julian Prior‏: Don’t understand why Broad was bowling with the new ball over Overton. He’s fodder for Smith in this form. Overton is the only bowler that has had Smith in any kind of trouble.

How much do I have to drink before I'm able to bat like Justin Langer?

Chris Woakes is chucked the new ball, Stuart Broad out of the attack already. Not happening for him.

Woakes up at 85 mph ish with this new hard ball. Mitch Marsh sees out the over.

Steve Smith is still at the crease, still looks as serene as ever.

That seems a wasted review. Sometimes you get hooked into these reviews.

    Desperation.

You can totally understand why England burn a review on Steve Smith - that's as close as they may get all day. It was missing leg stump by about three or four ball widths...

I would have thought that's missing the leg stump...

BIG. Anderson to Smith, looked leg side but England review it for lbw...

  10. Aus 286-4published at 84.4 overs

James Anderson gets a bit of in dip into Mitch Marsh, into the box area, leading to grunts all around. That's another good ball, well left by Marsh #2.

And then an inside edge to get him off strike. A touch of luck.

Ben Lund: It's a real shame England lost the momentum of this Test. No use trying to remedy a bowling attack lacking in purpose and confidence when we've given the opposition a spoonful of both before they head out to bat.

A man in the crowd is spraying water onto a group of kids. A heinous offence in an English cricket ground as the temperature hovers in single figures, very welcome indeed in the Perth heat.

Another drive which sounds as good as it looks as Mitch Marsh tonks Stuart Broad for four through the covers. Lovely, lovely shot.

The lead will be down to 100 soon.

With this attack, it's difficult to get Smith out. You don't have any real pace and there's no great spinner to turn the ball away from him.

  14. Aus 281-4published at 83 overs

    Smith 135, M Marsh 14

James Anderson and Stuart Broad are 0/118 between them in this innings. Time to step up lads!

Anderson is straight to Smith, too straight maybe. Smith moves past 130, he has made the contest between bat and ball non-existent.

Shot of the morning. Lovely from Smith, that sounded perfect as he leans into a drive and gives it the full arced follow-through. Four all day long.

  15. Aus 274-4published at 82 overs

    Smith 129, M Marsh 13

Beauty! That's lovely form Stuart Broad, perfect length to Mitch Marsh and straightening up. Marsh fishing outside off. Joe Root takes some air catches at slip - hopefully he'll see any edges tonight.

Marsh then drives at one, on the up, a few fans want a catch but it's into the turf first.

Here comes Stuart Broad, windmilling in. England need some Trent Bridge action from the big man. He's a streaky bowler, a hot streak now is what is required.

Steve Smith plays a single off his hip, making Broad look about as fast as early-90s Gooch.

Former Aussie wicketkeeper Ian Healy has just been out among the crowd as part of his TV duties. Smart in a blue suit, he's posing for selfies, shaking hands and kissing babies. It's like he's running for prime minister.

England have to bring their fielders up. This is the moment. We've had moments in the series where England haven't quite grabbed it. They have to now.

  20. new ball

    New ballpublished at 81 overs

    Smith 128, M Marsh 12

Shot! That's a ripper from Mitch Marsh, a gunshot of sound off the face of the bat, driven for four.

And with that England take the new ball. I didn't know you could do that midway through an over. First ball up and Anderson finds the edge of Mitch Marsh's bat!

Safe. There's swing though. Mild swing. Robbie Williams circa 2001.
