England have a strange field to Smith. The indication is that they're going to bowl straight at him. His lbw percentages are about average, although he's out more frequently to the spinners than he is to the pace bowlers.

Yes, I know Steve Martin and John Candy go to Chicago in Planes, Trains and not Detroit. And it's Thanksgiving, not Christmas. But come on.

Steve Smith doesn't do nervous 90s does he? But he's even fidgetier than usual at the start of this Stuart Broad over, getting squared up and then picking off a four with a nice on drive which beats the field.

A deep single takes him to 99.

Have you considered renting a car with John Candy and driving Sam? Hilarity will ensue.

Stuck at La Guardia airport in New York trying to get to Detroit. Been here 7 hours as snowstorms thwart every attempt for the planes to take-off. I think I would prefer to be in Perth.

There are some wide cracks out there. I could see my wife and kids down one of them! Where Shaun Marsh is facing Jimmy Anderson, there's a huge crack on leg stump. It's right where the ball will pitch and it runs for about 10 yards.

The overhead camera makes a crack right in Shaun Marsh's eyeline look very ominous indeed. But I've yet to see a ball do much - Craig Overton got one into the face of Steve Smith yesterday which was a beauty but that's about it.

That's fairly brisk for Jimmy Anderson though, leaps up a bit at Shaun Marsh and hits him on the handle.

After 22 Tests, Steve Smith's average was 40 with four hundreds. He then got a century in each of his next four Tests and hasn't looked back. In his last 36 matches, he's made 17 hundreds, averaging 74.

A horrific state. Awful bar. Awful beer. At least that’s over so I can listen to TMS and drink slightly less awful beer. And we don’t have to go to work tomorrow. What a life. Anderson to skittle over two very quickly. We live in hope.

How about this for a field in the first over of the day? One slip, no gully, five men on the leg side and three on the boundary.

Me too Swanny, caught the film before my shift. Big fan of the cameo role from a British comedy legend early on. I'll say no more.

What's the alternative to pick and mix out there?

Steve Smith is an intriguing batsman to watch. He moves across so far, covering up his stumps. Makes it look easy.

I went to see Star Wars last night. It was very good, although they don't do pick and mix at the cinema in Australia. It ruined my evening.

Ah, the Manchester of Bohemia Annie! Not sure if that's a compliment or an insult. Have you got a bar that's also a launderette?

Stuart Broad to open up at the other end, Steve Smith steps across his stumps and clubs a single, before Shaun Marsh plays a shot through midwicket for three.

Wide awake with a stinking cold here in Liberec, Czech Republic. Need some wickets to cheer me up!

We might be waiting a while. Maybe England should just agree to give Smith 100 in the first innings of every Test and just not bother letting him bat?

This is a field that suggests they're not going to try and get Steve Smith out - they're going to wait for him to make a mistake.

  17. Aus 204-3published at 62.4 overs

    Smith 93, Marsh 7

Anderson gets a bit of added bounce from the first ball of the day, Smith watching it onto the bat and nudging into the leg side. Anderson has men all over the field, not exactly an attacking start.

Maybe the plan is to just bore Smith out. There's one slip and that's it. Doesn't matter if you bowl a half volley on leg stump and Smith picks up a single.

    AUSTRALIA AVOID THE FOLLOW-ON.

I'm expecting, and hoping for, the best. If England can't shift Steve Smith then it's looking like a fine day for batting. But I think they will early on. I'm very positive.

If England could get a break or two, as Australia managed on the final day in Adelaide, then the new ball is only 18 overs away.

James Anderson to open up day three. It's a big first hour etc...
