Pat Cummins on bowling to the tail: "The thing I love about fast bowling is you can be the best batsman in the world but still face a 150kmh bouncer. To see the tail jumping around, I love to see that. It feels like we're on top.

"The wicket has got good bounce and pace but absolutely no sideways movement. If we can bat the whole day today, that will be brilliant. More than anything else, it gives the bowlers a day off. "

Here we go - huge reception for Steve Smith as Shaun Marsh.

Smith has got 21 Test centuries - at the moment anyway.

Australia bowler Pat Cummins speaking to ABC: "We thought we might run through the England tail but 6-30 was more than we could have hoped for.

"I think we're really lucky at the moment. It feels like a well-balanced attack. It feels like it's fairly equal and we all have a chance of taking top order wickets. As long as we're bowling them out for 400 on a flat wicket, I'm happy."

England all-rounder Chris Woakes on TMS: "We feel we're in a strong position. We still have 400 on the board. Day three is usually moving day, so hopefully we can get some early poles and put Australia under some early pressure."

Two topics of conversation around the ground this morning. How many will Steve Smith get? Will it rain on days four and five? The consensus seems to be that a Smith double ton is more likely than the arrival of the wet stuff.

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

It doesn't feel like the game is in the balance because Smith got to 90 so easily. You just fear how someone like Smith, if he gets in, he scores so fast... England need a first-innings lead in this match, and they'll do well to get one.

  8. Postpublished at 02:23 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

Basically, hope he gets tired or lazy and hits one to a fielder...

  9. How do you get Smith out?published at 02:23 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

England all-rounder Chris Woakes on TMS: "It's the key question. He's a fine player and playing really well. We need to keep building pressure on him - and try a few funky fields and get into his head a little bit. He's quite tricky to get out on a pitch like this."

The Aussies limbering up. The fast bowlers, like Josh Hazlewood, are excused from the circuits. The dismissed batsmen, like Usman Khawaja and Cameron Bancroft, still have to go through it despite being set to put their feet up with a brew.

  19. 'He's played with a cigar in his mouth'published at 02:05 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Steve Smith is 92 not out and he's played with a cigar in his mouth. He's hardly broken sweat, he's batted wonderfully well.

England have tried things against him but on a pitch like this, good players know there's runs in it for them.

England's worry is that Steve Smith could go big - and I mean really big.

Then, history tells you that if a team is down in the series and goes into the third innings of a Test with parity, negativity can creep in.

  20. The state of playpublished at 02:04 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

    Aus 203-3

The good news for England fans is that Australia are still 200 runs behind.

And Shaun Marsh is pretty new to the crease.

And there's a suggestion that the pitch may be cracking up a bit.

    Err, that's probably about it.

Any other reasons for optimism? Let us know!
