The false excitement given to me by the BBC sport app sending a notification that turns out to be Smith getting his double ton is not OK.

To all of us watching, we thought Smith was bound to get a double hundred. But for Smith, it was a moment of real joy and release. He's on 200 and I don't think he's going to change tempo much, either. He's just going to keep going.

You have to say that's magnificent. Steve Smith goes to 200, and the way he's going he may only be halfway through.

He brings up the landmark with a push off the bowling of Moeen Ali. He celebrates wildly, and quite right too.

How many more can he score? And will he give an England bowler a sniff of a chance?!

Thanks Amy - this has been a tough day in the comms box, I can't imagine what it's been like in the field.

Alastair Cook has been fielding at slip for the best part of 24 hours. He's not taken a catch, I don't think he's even seen the ball...

When England were 360/4 I didn't hear one Australian in the crowd say 'we are garbage!' 'Throw the towel in.'

Their psyche doesn't allow for that.

Perspective needs to be thrown into the pot. We are doom and gloom merchants.

England are all out of ideas. Just give everyone a bowl at this stage.

I'm off for a bit. Tom Rostance will guide you through the rest of the innings.

Steve Smith works a single from Moeen's first ball to take him within two runs of a double century. There's nothing happening for Moeen. No turn, no bounce, no drift.

There's a brief flicker of interest as Mitch Marsh tries to smack a delivery through short leg, but Mark Stoneman thrusts his pads in the way. Marsh is trying to get after Moeen, walking down the wicket and cracking the ball away, before he punches a drive for four.

Much cooler now, very pleasant to be outside, unless you're an England fielder. The clouds above represent the darkness of the situation they find themselves in. It would be English luck if the promised rain arrived overnight, rather than a time to save them.

Oh! Joe Root has, um, just taken a blow in a very painful area. Steve Smith chips a delivery back at him, it bounces through Root's hands and up into his middle section. Root makes an "ooft" noise and then doubles over, half in discomfort, half in amusement.

Smith pushes a single down the ground, helped by Stuart Broad, diving over it, before a chip through the covers by Mitch Marsh adds another one.

Moeen whirls his way through another tidy over, with Smith tapping a single down the ground before Marsh defends the rest of the over.

It's been so long since I saw a wicket that I'm beginning to wonder if I dreamed Moeen's strike this morning.
