Bancroft went back when he should've gone forward and the bat was going toward mid-wicket. That's a recipe for getting out.

    Plumb. England have a breakthrough!

A scratchy knock from Cameron Bancroft comes to an end he falls lbw to Chris Woakes. England really, really needed that. It was a decent delivery from Woakes but Bancroft should really have been coming forward to that. He was beaten for pace in the end as the ball cannoned into his back pad.

The benefits of bowling at the stumps, ey.

The image of toiling bowlers having exhausted plan Z is what typifies the Ashes down under for me - has there ever been a 4 or 5 match series where a side hasn’t taken 20 wickets in a single game?

Joe Root has positioned himself very close at second slip as Stuart Broad continues. That tells you how easy paced this pitch is. A batting paradise. Broad is now scratching away at the seam under the watchful as he umpire Sundaram Ravi. Are England wanting this kookaburra changing?

Now full from Broad. This one was going to hit the stumps but it's over-pitched. Warner whacks the ball back past the bowler's right boot. He's now just one hit away from a century.

Alex Forbes: I don't want knee-jerk reactions from the ECB and selectors, but some reaction would be nice. Someone should be held accountable for the poor performance.

Nick Cook: A lot of comments blaming the selectors but I don't think they could have done anything else. Mark Wood hasn't proved his fitness and the MCG isn't historically a big turning pitch so why play Crane? A bad toss to lose but hopefully our batsman can deliver this time.

If you get on these dry, flat pitches and you don't have enough pace in your bowling attack, then you need a quality spinner. And England don't.

    Bancroft 25, Warner 90

That'll encourage Chris Woakes a little. The England bowler gets one to jag back from outside off stump towards Warner's hip and the batsman has to chop down on the ball to protect himself.

Now Warner moves into the 90s in classic David Warner style. Minimal foot movement and hands thrown at the ball. The extra cover fielder gets a hand on the ball to prevent the damage to two.

Remember how Aussie TV was talking about Warner getting a ton after he'd only faced one ball. Now they are talking about him getting a double.

    Bancroft 25, Warner 88

Stuart Broad is persisting with his round the wicket ploy to the left handed Warner. He hasn't taken a wicket since Adelaide remember. Another ball drifts onto Warner's pads and allows the Australian to take an easy single.

England's seamers have bowled just 10 balls so far that would have hit the stumps. Deja vu?

Cameron Bancroft didn't look in the best of nick this morning and still doesn't look interested in upping his scoring rate after the break. He's looking disciplined. As a result the fans are starting to get a Mexican wave going in the crowd. Big cheers as the wave builds momentum but the customary boos as the members refuse to get involved.

Now there's a smattering of applause as Bancroft collects a couple off his hip.

  14. Aus 110-0published at 30 overs

A better five balls follow from Stuart Broad and that keeps Warner tied down on off stump. No runs come but no suggestion Warner is in any danger either.

The ball is just not moving off the straight under the blue Melbourne sky and hot sun.

Stuart Broad will take the opening over from the other end here. He gets booed once again as his name is read out. He's been heavily criticised by many of you but I reckon he was the best of England's bowlers before lunch.

Ah. That is awful Stu. Short, down the leg side, and Warner flicks the first ball of the over for the simplest of boundaries.

  16. Aus 106-0published at 29 overs

    Bancroft 23, Warner 83

David Warner will have to wait in the search for the 17 runs he needs for his hundred as Cameron Bancroft is on strike for the first over after lunch.

It's Chris Woakes who will start with the ball and the Aussie opener gets a thick outside edge that zips through gully for four.

Chris Woakes has a frustrated look on his face with his arms up above his head. No change in the flow after lunch.

  17. Aus 102-0published at 28 overs

Right folks. After all that miserable chat in the lunch break it's time for the afternoon session.

Can England work their way back into this? Will David Warner move from 83 not out to a century?

    Let's find out...
