  1. Aus 96-0published at 26 overs

    Bancroft 19, Warner 77

Good line and length from Curran until he drops short on leg and Warner rides it well, guiding round the corner for four.

Again Curran strays onto leg stump to the left-hander and Warner flicks it fine to the fence - that's poor bowling with no fine leg in place.

    A dot ball to finish.

David Warner is firmly in the mood to do whatever he wants. A slightly loose drive at a full ball doesn't quite go where he intended but still streaks away past gully for four.

Better footwork follows and he pushes away for another single.

Anderson to Bancroft - a short ball but the opener is picking it up much better now and ducks safely under.

A checked drive back to Anderson to finish - the England bowler throwing down the stumps but Bancroft was easily back in his crease.

Bancroft looked really scratchy early on but is now starting to move his feet a little better.

  5. Aus 83-0published at 01:17 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2017

Cameron Bancroft has looked pretty unsettled so far today and again misses out on a poor ball from Tom Curran, picking out the fielder at point.

An inside edge into the pads to finish and Curran picks up a maiden.

Liam Mellor: Who are the selectors and leaders in this England set-up? Out of form players get away with mediocrity and we fail to blood new talent. 5-0 all over it.

Jack Beecroft: England have lost the urn, so why not mix the side up?! Find out if they've got anything about them. Crane should definitely be playing.

  7. Aus 83-0published at 23 overs

    Bancroft 19, Warner 64

Anderson now round the wicket at Warner, who has effectively just had to play two scoring shots all day - the punch down the ground and the cut.

He's forced to play a few defensive strokes here before a wide one is cut away for four.

Just under 20 minutes until lunch. Warner moves to 64. Ahem.

  9. Aus 79-0published at 22 overs

Tom Curran continues to David Warner, who rocks one away square for a single.

Cameron Bancroft punches off the back foot towards the fence but James Anderson does well to dive and flick the ball back in time. Or did he? After a lengthy look at the replay, the third umpire does decide in Anderson's favour and that's yet another three on the massive ground.

    Bancroft 16, Warner 58

James Anderson re-enters the fray. England have a man straight on the drive on the leg side, standing right next to the non-striker...and David Warner still finds a way to batter it down the ground for four between the fielder and Cameron Bancroft.

An understatement to say he's on one today. Warner finds another gap to scamper three once again.

  12. How's stat?!published at 00:58 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2017

Australia's last three totals in their first innings at the MCG:

    • 2016: 624-8 dec (v Pakistan)
    • 2015: 551-3 dec (v West Indies)
    • 2014: 530 all out (v India)
  13. Aus 67-0published at 20 overs

Curran starts outside off, Bancroft drives it back and the young Surrey man fields.

Another dot follows before Bancroft flashes one over the slips. Hands on hips for England but the ball was there to be hit. Not convincing from Bancroft either, mind - his first boundary off his 53rd ball of the day.

Good response from Curran, tight lines and no runs from the rest of the over.

This is going to be a big moment for the young fella. Your first Test in front of a big crowd. It doesn't get any bigger than this.

Here comes Tom Curran on debut...

  16. 50 runs

Woakes over-pitches and Warner marmalises it down the ground and to the fence.

A single takes Warner on to 47 before Bancroft puts him back on strike.

Joe Root now puts two short catchers in the covers to Warner...an attacking move entirely at odds with most of his other decisions today.

Woakes goes shortish and Warner rocks back to pull it away through mid-wicket for four and that takes him to 50. Ominous.

He's made 26 fifties in Tests now, with 20 hundreds. Very handy conversion rate.

Jack Mendel: Nothing says 'we back you' to Tom Curran, than bringing on your ineffective under-performing spinner with three wickets in the series, before him... ball is 15 overs old. Give Curran a bowl while it still might move. Give him a chance.

Paddy Emmerson: Oh good the no- spinning spin bowler Moeen is on and already getting tanked about. Why oh why is he playing? What a waste of a young spinner in Crane. Why isn't Curran bowling?

Thomas Tew: Joe Root showing here he’s not up to captaincy. At Test or any level. Bowlers are bowling like a drain. Defensive field. 5-0. Senior players should be ashamed.

  18. Aus 53-0published at 00:50 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2017

Moeen runs through another over, Warner picking up a couple through the covers before adding another to the total toward mid-off.

Tom Curran is busy warming up, a first spell on his debut imminent.

  20. Aus 50-0published at 17 overs

Bancroft pushes a drive off Woakes and takes on sub fielder Mason Crane, whose throw hits the stumps...but Bancroft was already in and the ricochet means Australia can pick up another two runs. England's day so far in a nutshell.

A single off the last for Warner and that's the 50 partnership up. Save for a few Broad deliveries and the odd Anderson bumper, it's been all too easy for the hosts.
