  1. Aus 296-5published at 105 overs

Come on, Joe! Tim Paine finds the rope of the first time in his innings as England's captain fails to get down and stop a drive through mid off. Woakes is never one to show much disgruntlement on the field but he definitely can't when it's the skipper involved.

Shaun Marsh isn't an electric player like David Warner and Steve Smith but he steadies the ship and builds partnerships so can be a different kind of threat. If he stays in and keeps accumulating he can change the innings from 350 all out to a big score.

  3. Aus 291-5published at 104.1 overs

Whack. Rank stuff from Woakes but given the treatment by Shaun Marsh. That's his seventh four of the innings. He's batting really nicely despite wickets falling at the other end which is a worry for England.

"Yes, Mozzaaa", shouts Jonny Bairstow from behind the stumps as Moeen bowls a ball that, to me at least, looked pretty regulation.

Tim Paine is wearing a black armband in this match following the death of his father in-law on Christmas Eve. He adds two more runs to his total as Moeen continues to look a shadow of the bowler we have seen in England.

  6. 50 runs

50 for Marshpublished at 103.3 overs

Shaun Marsh looks a little nervy on the brink of the landmark as he goes for a single that isn't there but gets the run he needs a ball later.

A controversial selection but Marsh is proving the doubters wrong.

Don't go to sleep just yet people. That is one of the best hours of play England have had in this series albeit it doesn't have much competition. 40 runs have been added but England have taken two big wickets, Steve Smith and last week's centurion Mitchell Marsh.

Moeen Ali is going to continue after drinks with Marsh on the verge of a half-century.

Yes Chris Woakes!! Aussie collapse coming - just tried to bet on England to win the Ashes now but it won’t let me...?

Nice from Paine. He gets off the mark by pushing the ball into the leg side and then sprinting for two.

Chris Woakes corrects his line to back outside off stump. England definitely aren't interested in catches behind the stumps. Alastair Cook is the sole slip fielder.

A good first hour for England. That's drinks.

  10. Aus 282-5published at 102 overs

    Moeen 9-0-43-0

Moeen Ali continues with his ineffective spin. Both wickets have fallen to seam this morning so you'd like to think Root will be considering bringing back seam at both ends.

If he wasn't before he will be now! Shaun Marsh uses his feet and expansively drives through the covers for four. The left-hander moves to 49.

Nick Hall: Keep bowling them short and wide lads, easy stuff.

Pat O'Hara: If England were in this position we’d be all out for 330.

Simon Clarke: Is bowling for drag-ons where you set the ball on fire before the delivery?

  12. Aus 278-5published at 101 overs

Tim Paine joins Shaun Marsh in the middle. These two have shown themselves to be very able batsmen in this series. England can't let up.

That caught the underside edge showing how it's just keeping a bit low here. That's the ball to bowl apparently.

He was a bit in between and the ball held in the pitch a little bit but that was not a good shot.

    Now then...

Chris Woakes replaces Tom Curran after the youngster's expensive previous over and straight away gets a very similar dismissal. It's another wide delivery and Mitchell Marsh inside edges back onto his stumps.

    England have an opening.

Runs are flowing for the first two since the opening session of the match. Mitchell Marsh this time gets a stride in to Moeen Ali and takes two runs into the covers.

Here's Tom Curran celebrating the big wicket of Steve Smith. We saw this trademark celebration a few times during England's one-day matches in the summer. Hopefully it will become a fixture of the Test team for many a year.

    S Marsh 44, M Marsh 7

Once again this is a period where England really need some quick wickets after the initial breakthrough to take a grip on the session.

How can Curran build on the boost of his first wicket? Not too well to be honest.

He bowls three balls on Shaun Marsh's pads and they go for two, two and then four. The last is a fine tickle down to fine leg.

Guy Flitton: Curses! There goes my £5 on Smith to get 300. Seemed reasonable enough at the time.

It's day two, so the Richies are here, complete with their own brass section. They belt out Advance Australia Fair to applause from pretty much the whole stadium. In response, the Barmies give it 'God Save Your Queen'.
