So England added 72 runs in that session for the loss of two wickets.

The first wicket was sadly familiar to England fans - Joe Root not converting a strong start, miscuing a pull off Pat Cummins straight to Nathan Lyon set back for that shot.

The second wicket was familiar only in the context of this bizarre Test match. Dawid Malan edged Josh Hazlewood onto his pads, was given out lbw but decided against a review that would have reprieved him.

It's a rare way to get out - but James Vince also managed not to realise he had hit it yesterday when he was incorrectly given out lbw.

Matt Gaston: Warner reprieved because the delivery was not valid. Malan choose not to review, therefore the decision stands. Valid delivery, wrong umpiring decision.

Hazlewood angles one towards off stump and that ultimately goes down as a good leave by Cook as it moves past the stumps.

The Aussie quick goes short and Cook rolls on it, away into leg for one.

Lunch set to be taken after this over and Bairstow wisely leaves alone outside off before defending another.

Final ball of the session - Bairstow leaves. He's 16 not out, with Cook unbeaten on 134 as England trail by 63 runs.

Nathan Wake: 50% of our wickets haven’t even been out! How can you not review an inside edge? Add in Root throwing away his wicket and you have to question the mentality of this England team.

    Cook 133, Bairstow 16

Bairstow clips into leg for a couple before playing a simply atrocious shot that he's lucky doesn't result in him also departing the field.

The keeper wafts across the line at a length ball from Bird that just misses off stump.

Ooft. The next one is an edge off a loose drive that slices through the vacant third slip area and to the fence. Have a word, Alastair.

Paul Atkinson: What is the decision-making difference between the umpires double-checking that Cook held the catch yesterday when the batsman walked, and the umpires NOT double-checking the inside edge just now?

Shaky's Disco: If Warner can be reprieved because of a no ball, why can't Vince and Malan also be reprieved due to umpiring error??

Richard Stedeford: They need to sort out the review system in cricket. Why is Warner reprieved after a front foot no ball is shown on replays but Malan is not despite it being proven he is not out?! Should replays just not be shown to maintain the value of an onfield umpire?

  7. Eng 257-4published at 83 overs

Of all the ways England have found to squander strong positions in this series, not reviewing an lbw decision against you when you've hit it is particularly novel.

This second one by Malan is even more bizarre, given that Cook, who was at the non-striker's end again, clearly told Vince to review his one yesterday when the number three chose not to.

Not that England have squandered this position yet, of course. Bairstow looks determined early on, working Hazlewood nicely off the pads through mid-wicket for three.

Cook leaves a wide one to finish.

So, to sum up, of the four wickets England have lost, two have been poor shots and two have been lbws that would have been overturned.

Jackson Bird takes the new ball from the other end - a fairly tame over that ends with Bairstow pinging it away through the covers for four.

Still struggling to process that Malan lbw - have a look for yourselves below to see the edge he got on it.

Regardless of how and why Malan and Cook came to the decision not to review it, it's also a poor decision from the umpire not to spot the inside edge.

Chris Wellman: Not another English batsman who didn't review when it was clear that it was nicked!! What is going on!! REVIEW

Jon Evans: How can you not know if you've hit the ball?!?. Should have reviewed, 2 reviews and important wicket.

Do batsmen not know if they have hit it these days? You have got to blame the batsman there.

I...I just don't know how Malan hasn't felt that he edged that. In relative terms that's a thick edge - he certainly got more on it than James Vince did when he also didn't review his lbw decision yesterday.

The impact could well have come down to umpire's call too. It could well have been worth a review even without realising he'd hit it.

Jonny Bairstow is the new man, driving away for three to get off the mark.

Hazlewood then raps Cook on the pads, a brief appeal but nothing doing.

Dawid Malan is out with the score on 246, which is the same score when he was out and started the collapse from 246-4 to 303 all out in Brisbane.

    Malan lbw 14 (Eng 246-4)

A wicket straight away with the new ball for Josh Hazlewood as he gets Dawid Malan lbw.

But that's not even half the story.

Replays show that Malan got a fair edge on it into his pads.

But he doesn't review it, even after consultation with Alastair Cook, and has to depart.

Lyon continues over the wicket to this left-handed pair, with Cook nurdling it around the corner one.

A touch flatter to Malan, but sliding down leg and the England number five glances it away for a single.

Lyon now goes back round the wicket and Cook taps it back to the bowler.

Last delivery with this ball - Cook cuts it but it's stopped at point.

Ryan Geleit: Let’s be serious. Getting repeatedly out between 50 and 100 is about the best problem you could hope for as a batsman.

Daniel: Root's conversion from 50s to 100s does need improving but at least he regularly delivers half centuries. They're always valuable, if not match winning.

Katya Witney: Although it is a bit of worry that Root keeps not converting, I'd be a lot more concerned if he wasn't making 50 at all.

Mitchell Marsh sends down a few innocuous deliveries before he digs one in and it flies high past Dawid Malan and far down leg - but Tim Paine does really well, moving to his right and clinging onto it.

A maiden to Marsh. Australia just one over away from the new ball.

Re Paul (12:44). I completely disagree. Root should be criticised for constantly being out between 50 and 80. It's just not good enough. He should be a ton machine. His scores may save some Tests but they win very few.
