Ben Thapa: This the worst 24no I’ve ever seen, and yet an invaluable one, from Woakes. He’s batting like the kid who got a smart new bat for Christmas, and doesn’t want to ruin it...

That edge of Woakes between Paine and Smith was like a bolt of electricity to the Barmy Army. I reckon they are louder now than at any other point in the series.

This is a really good spell for England now and the England fans have all just spontaneously got to their feet to chant "Barmy Army, Barmy Army". Brilliant noise from them around the MCG.

It's all going England's way! Another edge from Woakes flies between slip and gully for another boundary. "Four more to the England, four more," is now the chant.

This must be the scratchiest 24 runs Chris Woakes has ever made. Now he tries to pull his bat away but the ball glances off the blade and goes down to third man again. He won't care. The 50 partnership is up.

In the last half an hour, with things like that Woakes edge not going to hand, you feel the momentum is really going England's way.

Where has this come from? This pitch has looked very placcid in the last half hour but Josh Hazlewood has just beaten Alastair Cook with an absolute beauty. It was angled in from round the wicket but moved away and went past the inside edge.

More frustration for the Aussies! Hazlewood finds the edge of the Woakes' bat this time but with Steve Smith standing at a wide first slip, the ball perfectly bisects him and Tim Paine and runs away for four.

Hazlewood is furious. He screams in frustration and stands halfway down the pitch with hands on hips at the end of the over.

    Cook 171, Woakes 13

Ed Smith and Michael Vaughan are having an interesting debate on TMS. What would a captain prefer - a batsman who averages 45 and scores big hundreds but makes a lot of low scores or someone who averages 45 and makes that score every innings? It's a comparison you could make between Cook and Root at the moment. What do you think?

On the field Jackson Bird bowls a nice over but ruins it with the last ball with one that is over-pitched and Woakes drives gloriously through the covers. Geoffrey would like that shot.

Why is the fine $9,514.20?published at 03:58 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2017

Dave Wilson: Fine probably based on Bradman’s first-class average.

DarenPurvey: The fine probably started as a round number but annually they go with inflation or an agreed %.

Australia still have four catchers on the off-side to Cook with Hazlewood bowling. The Aussie pacer is just hanging the ball outside off stump to Cook, looking for a mis-hit drive or cut.

Cook doesn't look like falling into the trap. He waits and waits until Hazlewood comes into his area and then drives for one to the left of David Warner at mid-off.

  12. Eng 339-6published at 108 overs

    Cook 169, Woakes 9

A double change for Australia. Jackson Bird replaces Nathan Lyon.

Woakes looked good in the previous over but he's played a poor shot here. Bird's first delivery is back of a length outside off stump and Woakes just hangs a bat at it. That can only result in trouble.

Woakes is annoyed with himself but responds well by playing proper defensive strokes to end the over. Jackson Bird will be desperate for a wicket on his return to the side. He has now bowled 22 overs for 71 runs without a wicket.

Usman Khawaja has just been on the big screen telling us that the fine for a spectator entering the field is $9,514.20. A random figure. Why not the full $10k?

Mitchell Marsh is off. He has bowled 22 wicketless overs in this series so far. Josh Hazlewood returns to the attack. Steve Smith needs a wicket and he turns to his best bowler.

That's nice from Woakes. No more than a front foot push but it is timed nicely and he collects three. The lead is now into double figures. It is looking very flat again with this ball getting older. How far ahead do England need to be? I think 100 at least.

Chris Woakes looks far more comfortable to the spin of Nathan Lyon than the fast bowling of Pat Cummins earlier. He's using his feet and looking to come down the pitch when he can but picks out the fielder with a good shot on the final.

Mel 73: Come on Steve Smith. It was nice enough to play with 10 men by including Mitch Marsh but two dropped catches and some pies for Alastair Cook to get to a hundred as well?

Shot! Lovely from Alastair Cook as he dispatches Mitchell Marsh through the covers for four more. Marsh looks very ineffective and Tim Paine is now coming up to the stumps to the medium-fast bowler. The ultimate insult.

This partnership is ticking along nicely now. It is worth 28 and Chris Woakes has only added six of those runs.

Josh Hazlewood is warming up. It does feel like a change of bowling is needed.

England are ahead! More cheers from the stands following a Woakes single. Now, how big a lead can England get?

Cook just keeps on plodding along and nicks the strike with another nudge to mid-on. Josh Hazlewood hits the stumps with a good throw but Woakes was well into his ground.
