  1. What have you missed?published at 06:00

Sadly, not that much, thanks to the rain. We're currently experiencing the second rain delay of day four and this one is looking terminal.

Earlier, James Anderson was out to the first ball of the day, ensuring that Alastair Cook carried his bat with a sublime 244 not out, with England all out for 491 and a lead of 164.

Australia started well in response, before opener Cameron Bancroft chopped on to Chris Woakes and Anderson removed the skittish Usman Khawaja to leave the tourists 65-2.

But David Warner, Steve Smith and the rain have frustrated England since. The batsmen largely just looking to occupy the crease, while light drizzle has got heavier and there are puddles on the outfield.

Australia are 103-2, still trailing by 61.

David Warner, still padded up, has just taken an Aussie rules ball out to the side of the pitch and done a couple of keepie-uppies with it.

A glance up at the weather. Grim. Off he turns down the ramp and puts in a grubber kick that just misses the two umpires walking ahead of him.

Umpire Ravi turns and laughs. That's about the most action we've had in two hours.

England have some of nicest players in cricket. I wouldn't say there are many mongrels. I wonder whether it is not necessarily because they have not got the skills but need to look at someone who has that.

Hello to those waking up at 5:30am in the UK.

We've got a rain delay. And it's starting to look like that might be it for the day. A pitch inspection is supposedly currently taking place but some big covers have just come back on.

This is the second rain delay of the day - there was another 30-minute one after lunch earlier.

Weather aside, here's what's happened - James Anderson was out first ball of the day, leaving Alastair Cook unbeaten on 244 and England all out for 491, a lead of 164.

Australia were going well in reply, before Cameron Bancroft chopped on and Anderson had Usman Khawaja caught behind to leave the hosts 65-2.

But David Warner and Steve Smith have shut things down since - albeit in the face of some accurate England bowling - scoring very slowly to take Australia to 103-2, trailing by 61.

Big covers coming on. You know it's dark when the groundsman's truck has its headlights on. This could be terminal.

England are in safe hands with Joe Root. I know he has the right vision and ideas of what want to do with this team. I think we will see a difference next summer.

He has got to be better at acting. There will not be many mornings when you feel great.

This England team has got to be careful to not be reactionary. You look back to Adelaide and it took three hours to realise that they were bowling too short.

One thing Joe Root and Trevor Bayliss have to answer is why has it taken so long to trigger the senior players into action and why do they not seem to be able to set the tone in a match.
