Australia have given everything here but they don't have their main tool in Mitchell Starc. When you are trying to find form and you get a wicket where the bounce nullified, it helps.

I always think with English sport - I am always interested to see how England play when they are criticised. It is always a back to the wall mentality to prove people wrong. The coaches and managers would love to be able to bottle up.

The MCG is playing some belters. Stone Roses, the Smiths, AC/DC and Silverchair. The tune-spinner is either a Mancunian in Australia, or an Aussie who likes Manchester.

  7. What you've missed...published at 05:00 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2017

Hello to those of you with a 5am alarm in the UK.

It's bad news - no, not that bad, don't worry, Australia haven't blitzed into a lead and skittled the England top order.

Instead, it's rain. There was a 30 minute delay earlier after lunch, but the drizzle has returned and got heavier, with the players having gone off at just after 04:00 GMT.

Prior to that, James Anderson was out to the first ball of the day, ensuring England were bowled out for 491 - a lead of 164 - with Alastair Cook carrying his bat, unbeaten on 244.

David Warner and Cameron Bancroft made steady progress in response, before the latter chopped on to his own stumps against Chris Woakes.

Anderson then removed the skittish Usman Khawaja caught behind for just 11. But Warner and Steve Smith have put the shutters down since, scoring very slowly and looking to occupy the crease.

Louis A Steyn: Best knock - Aiden Markram scoring 143 after being run out in the 90s on debut against Bangladesh. Came into the South Africa side with immense expectation on him and didn't crumble.

  9. New Zealand on top against Windiespublished at 04:49 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2017

Over in New Zealand there is a T20 going on between the Black Caps and West Indies with the hosts well on top.

New Zealand made 187-7 with Colin Munro and Glenn Philips, playing his fourth match, both making half-centuries.

In response the Windies have been reduced to 73-5 after 12 overs.

Chris Gayle was dismissed by Seth Rance, one of two wickets in two balls for the 30-year-old debutant.

Rovman Powell and Carlos Brathwaite are currently at the crease. Follow the live score here.

More from Glenn Maxwell: "The Big Bash has been hugely successful. It has transformed domestic cricket in Australia. Players might not have played in front of a crowd then all of a sudden will be playing in front of 70,000 at the MCG."

On which is the toughest T20 tournament: "The IPL is extremely tough. You have four overseas players and Indians who play extremely well in their own conditions."

Glenn Maxwell on what advice he would give the ECB when they set up the new domestic T20 competition in England: "The fireworks, the constant entertainment and keeping people in the game even at half-time.

"It keeps the fans engaged. They might not be 100% into cricket but there is always something going on in the game, whether it is live music or something else.

"You just want three hours of entertainment and that is why the Big Bash is such a good product."

I'll kick things off with a couple of nominations from the same match.

Best Test - West Indies beating England by five wickets at Headingley.

Favourite innings - Shai Hope's 118 not out to win that Test.

Against a backdrop of criticism over the state of West Indies cricket and a heavy innings defeat in the first Test, this win was just remarkable and a great moment for Test cricket.

At the centre of it all, a sublime performance by Shai Hope, who became the first man to score centuries in both innings of a first class match at Headingley.

His 147 in the first innings was brilliant but in many ways his 118 to win it in the second was even better. A nerveless, masterful knock from a player under immense pressure.

Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell , speaking to TMS, on his priorities across all formats: "I am just trying to deal with the team I am playing for at the moment. You can't think too much further ahead than that.

"The joy of batting for days on end is something that is unrivaled. Being able to do that in the Sheffield Shield is something I have dreamed about for a long time."

Asked if he holds the longer formats in the highest regard, Maxwell said: "I think so. It is the unknown for me. Something I hadn't done a lot of is spend time at the crease. For me to spend time in the middle and create a match-innings is something I hold dear."
