Warner has got himself into this defensive mentality. The skill of a fielding team is realising when a player is just playing for his off stump and creating gaps, seeing if that can create something. If you leave fielders on the boundary he will just play defensively.
The other thing I would have tried is go at Warner with a few short balls. He has got out three or four times with that shovel flick. I haven't seen England bowl one short ball yet.
England could have just created more of a scoring opportunity for Warner. On this surface you have got to keep the batsman thinking he can score runs.
In contrast to the overhead conditions, this has been one of the driest sessions of the series.
Just 33 runs scored since lunch, which ended at 02:10 GMT.
The last rain delay was about half an hour. How long will this one last?

Off they go again.
Stuart Broad isn't happy, repeatedly extending his palms to the sky and shrugging at the umpires.
Smith and Warner jog another single apiece.
And that's the first really ropey ball since the restart - Chris Woakes serving up a half-volley that Smith clatters through the covers for four.
That's the 100 up for the hosts, who trail by 61.
Joe Root registers a complaint about the ball with the umpire. Don't think there's much Kumar Dharmasena can do about it getting wet, Joe.

It's raining again.
Warner 39, Smith 20
Curran gets through Warner with the slower ball. The Aussie opener sees it and tries to pull but swipes over it as the ball loops into his upper thigh pad.
Good stuff from Curran, giving Warner no width to work with and varying his pace and length. That's a maiden.
That rain delay has meant tea time and close of play have been tweaked slighty. here we go:

We might have lost the talk of a 5-0 whitewash.

Smith drives out to deep cover for another couple.
Six runs off that over then - very expensive compared to the other overs since lunch - but Woakes did also draw that false shot from Warner.

Chances will come. Australia are not used to batting long periods defensively.
It requires a different mental attitude.
Steve Smith now on the drive, with James Anderson parrying in the covers to save three as Smith jogs through for one.
Close! Woakes slides into Warner's pads and the opener pops it up off the face and just over the top of a leaping Anderson.
Warner gets three but that was a bit streaky.

BBC Test Match Special statistician
It had been 14.3 overs since the last boundary.
Warner's last boundary was in the 13th over.

Richard Mallinder: Aussies batting like this is the last day?? What tactics are those?? Jimmy and Broady new ball for last 10 overs tonight can’t wait.

A run! Smith cuts away off the back foot, with Dawid Malan producing a fine diving stop at point to keep it to one.
That's four though - Curran drops shot and Warner pulls it away to the fence. I'd almost forgotten what a boundary was.
Better from Curran last up as Warner is again forced to defend.

Australia are digging a trench. Yes, they are taking up time, but the problem with not moving the score along would come if they lose a couple of wickets. Still a decent number of runs behind, they would normally have taken a bigger chunk out of England's lead after 40 overs at the crease.
Nice variety of length on a tight line from Chris Woakes to David Warner and the unusually watchful opener still can't get anything away.
Another yorker is fired down by Woakes, with Warner forced to dig it out. Plenty of menace on that one.
Still no runs since the restart. Can England convert tying these two down into a wicket?
Warner 32, Smith 16
Smith chides himself after trying to punch Curran away off the back foot but miscuing it straight into the ground instead.
A slower ball sees Smith just push it away to point. All very sedate - another maiden.
Chris Woakes continues from the Great Southern Stand End after waiting for David Warner to complete marking out his guard again.
The Warwickshire man mixes things up with a yorker that Warner does well to jab his bat down on.
The next couple are full outside off and Warner drives both but picks out the fielder both times.
A defensive stroke to finish and that's yet another maiden.

...and Steve Smith just defends all four balls for no run. As you were before the break.
Curran nicely back on his line and length are the rain delay.
