Whisper it quietly (very quietly), but it doesn't feel like a day for two spinners. Mason Crane already has his cap. "Erm, sorry Mason, change of plan..."

In a past timeline, Michael Beer is about to walk to the crease for Australia.
He played two Tests for Australia. You learn something new every day.

Jonathan Rushton: Lathered myself in factor 50 before heading to the SCG this morning. The universe is laughing at me now!
Paul Collingwood has just bowled Mike Hussey!
Well, Mussey's chopped on, but still. I miss Collingwood.
Bleak.
Sensational reference, Russell.
Meanwhile, back in 2011 time, Tim Bresnan and Kevin Pietersen have just tripped over one another trying to celebrate a wicket.

Re 2357. Harvey Keitel clearly doesn’t view this as a dead rubber.

We're currently watching highlights of the final match of the 2010-11 series in Sydney.
Shane Watson has just edged Tim Bresnan to slip, and shouted "aww no!" while doing so. Great days.
Steve Smith is currently averaging 151 in this series - the best by a batsman to have batted in more than two innings in an Ashes series.
The previous best was held by Geoffrey Boycott (147.3 in 1977).

This is more Edgbaston (feel free to insert another UK ground where it rains) than Sydney. Umbrellas, puddles, the smell of wet grass. The bravest spectators are huddling without cover in the stands, but plenty are heading for shelter. The outlook is grim.
I appreciate this gentleman's hat strategy.

I can see mizzle again. None of the forecasts have forecast this rain.
Bad news, I'm afraid. The covers are back on.
Fancy a tour of the SCG? We've got you covered.
England have now gone nine Tests without a win in Australia (D1, L8).
Only twice have they gone on a longer drought (1937-1951, D2, L10; 1987-1995, D4, L6).
Ebony Rainford-Brent
Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special
Moeen looks like he is slipping down into a dark place. The things that is worrying me the most - you can go up and down gears, but Moeen zoomed straight to gear 10 at Melbourne with his batting, which indicates no sense of control in the mind.
He is someone who normally bounces back - it's just a case of when.
England debutant Mason Crane, speaking to Channel 9, on a lack of match practice: "I'm feeling good - I've got a lot of overs under my belt in the nets. I played all the warm-up games so I'm feeling confident."
On working with former Australia leg-spinner Stuart MacGill: "I worked really hard with him last year and again this year. Hopefully I can use some of his wisdom."

Listening in Arctic Finland. No aurora borealis tonight so it’s the Test. Hope the 4G signal holds for the commentary (WiFi geoblocked!)

Hats off to the photographer with the zoom lens who has snapped Cameron Bancroft reading on the Australia dressing room balcony. His book of choice: 'The courage to be disliked: How to free yourself, change your life and achieve real happiness.'
Something nice and light, then.
