  1. Aus 58-1published at 19 overs

Crane over the wicket to Warner, who flicks round the corner and wants two, but is kept to one by the man running in.

Khawaja finds the same space behind square and jogs another single. Warner then drives to mid-on, who is deep enough to allow the opener one more.

Lbw shout off the final ball against Khawaja but nothing doing. A bit of turn back into the left-hander there.

  2. Aus 55-1published at 18 overs

    Warner 37, Khawaja 17

So Moeen to continue after drinks, bowling to Warner, who has ditched his helmet in favour of a cap.

Warner rocks back trying to hit away between point and cover - no run there at first, but he does finally get it in the gap and can scurry one.

Khawaja smothers the last couple for no run.

Crane has got quite an aggressive, purposeful run up. He follows through nicely so he's got a good chance of getting rotation and energy on the ball. But he's up against a couple of good players and there's one or two more to come.

    That's time for drinks.

England have bowled accurately enough - a ragged over from Tom Curran and the odd Mason Crane delivery aside - but not sure they've put David Warner and Usman Khawaja under enough pressure.

The tourists could have done with more than the wicket of Cameron Bancroft since lunch. Still 293 runs to play with though.

What can they do in the second part of this second session?

The fifty partnership came up from 90 balls, with five fours.

  7. Aus 53-1published at 17 overs

Crane sends down a low full toss that Warner works away for one before a bye down leg that Bairstow can't stop sees Australia bring up the 50 partnership.

The young leggie drags it down but Warner can't find the fence, driving to deep cover for a couple.

  8. Aus 49-1published at 03:02 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2018

Khawaja clips off his toes for one as Moeen strays a bit full - the England off-spinner has been much more accurate today in general though.

Tidy stuff again but Warner beats the close man in on the drive and jogs one.

You sense the England supporters in the crowd are with Crane, and that they sense it's an important moment in England's future. You know what a leg-spinner can do.

The pragmatic route to Crane would not be to go after him.

  12. Aus 47-1published at 15 overs

The second drifts down leg. The third is much better and forces Warner to defend on the front foot.

Warner then rocks back to also defend the fourth. The fifth is tossed up and Warner drives but picks out wide mid-off.

The last is short and Warner steps to leg, cutting through the covers to scamper another two.

  13. Aus 45-1published at 14.1 overs

Crane's first ball is a ropey, short long hop that Khawaja cracks away but only gets one for, with England giving their young leggie some cover on the mid-wicket boundary.

Warner is looking to impose himself on Curran, a relative novice. It's a benign pitch and Curran is having to learn fast.

  16. Aus 44-1published at 14 overs

    Trail by 302

Tom Curran has been the loosest of England's bowlers so far and sends down a half-volley that David Warner cracks through the covers for four.

And that's back-to-back fours - Curran over-compensating onto the pads and Warner clips it fine for four. England have no fine leg in place, because...

Curran over-pitches and Warner punches it down the ground for four, evading Stuart Broad's attempted diving stop.

A ragged over from Curran - three boundaries off it.

Moeen's bowling at a greater pace than before. There's a little glimmer of hope there for him.

  19. Aus 32-1published at 13 overs

Er, England have pushed mid-off back, gifting a single to both batsmen if they want it. Odd.

And then Khawaja smacks it down the ground, inside the deep mid-off and to the fence.

Ooof. Easily the best ball Moeen has bowled in a while, an absolute pearler that bites from middle and off and just whistles past the top of Khawaja's off stump. That's promising.

  20. Aus 25-1published at 12 overs

Khawaja slices Curran away just in front of point for a couple. Good work from Stoneman at mid-wicket, making a diving stop to prevent a flick to mid-wicket racing to the fence as Khawaja has to settle for one.

Warner drives out to the cover boundary for another single and Khawaja turns the final ball square for one.
