Regarding talk of producing “Australian” wickets in the UK - the wickets throughout the series have mainly been flat and pretty boring. England’s struggles have been due to some pretty ordinary batting.

Using the Aussie ball might help the bowlers get used to how it behaves, but as we’ve seen during this series - line and length gets results!!!

Moeen wheels through a second consecutive maiden to open up as Warner is forced to smother a few decent balls and misses out on cutting away a shorter one.

Double change - Tom Curran is into the attack for Stuart Broad...

  6. Aus 18-1published at 9 overs

Bright start from Moeen, more accurate so far than what he served up at Melbourne. Khawaja looking to move his feet and get down the pitch, but only able to defend. A maiden for Moeen.

Moeen Ali is going to have an early bowl. He may be England's second spinner in this Test but he got Usman Khawaja, who has struggled at times against off-spin, out cheaply at Brisbane.

    Can he do so again?

Cameron Bancroft looked pretty good in his first Test, particularly in that second innings at Brisbane. He played very positively there. I think it's hubris - all that laughter from his press conference afterwards. He hasn't looked great since. Today was a very bad dismissal. He missed an 82mph straight ball.

  9. Aus 18-1published at 8 overs

Khawaja works it off his hips for one before Warner patiently defends and leaves a few.

The last ball from Broad is too straight and Warner clips through mid-wicket for two.

Listening to the debate about how to prepare England teams to tour Australia, and with specific reference to ‘Australian-type wickets’, is there anything stopping someone producing a drop-in wicket of an Australian type that could be used in pre-tour preparation in the UK?

    Warner 11, Khawaja 4

Anderson, varying his lengths nicely, prevents Warner from getting anything away, until the Aussie opener slices away square for a couple.

It's been a pretty good start by England. They've bowled better lengths and there's nice carry to the keeper. It has been fuller by England and that's what it's needed all series.

  13. Aus 13-1published at 6 overs

Broad goes short and straight and Warner flicks it fine off the edge for four.

An inside edge follows but it evades the stumps and Warner runs a single.

Jonny Bairstow is wearing a black armband today. His father David, also a former Yorkshire and England wicketkeeper, died on this day in 1998.

Anderson strays too full and Khawaja punches it nicely down the ground for a couple.

Good response from Anderson, getting one past the outside edge going across Khawaja from over the wicket.

  15. Aus 6-1published at 4 overs

Broad drops just a tad short and Warner is able to flick it into leg for one.

Here goes Broad at Khawaja - but it's full and driven out through cover for one. The bat did skew in Khawaja's hands a tad there but controlled enough.

Bancroft the first Australian opener to be bowled out for a duck in the first innings of an Ashes Test since Graeme Wood, SCG, January 1979.

  17. Aus 4-1published at 3 overs

Anderson tries to give Khawaja a working over, probing on a nice length but the Aussie number three calmly defends all six deliveries. Another maiden for Anderson.

My impression was there was no footwork there. It was a pitched-up delivery. England only started to do that in Melbourne, and it's got Broad a wicket. Bancroft needs to work on his technique.

  19. Aus 4-1published at 2 overs

Khawaja turns it away into mid-wicket to get off the mark.

Warner had already scampered a single off the first ball and gets more runs, driving through the covers for a couple.
