Shot! A divine flick of the wrists from Usman Khawaja, whipping the ball through the leg side and away for four. He is such a lovely player to watch.

Meanwhile, at the bar, there's a man in a sequinned pink blazer that is just as stunning as that whip from Khawaja. Excellent work.

Neither batsman has tried to crash the ball about - they've been solid, sensible and just grinding away slowly to get into a position of strength. They're getting to where they want, slowly.

Australia will try and get up to England's score by tea. England will get tired. Then Australia will hope to cash in, and aim not to bat last. 400 is not necessarily a great total. England should learn from this - it's a really good lesson.

Mason Crane is on for a twirl, and Steve Smith pierces the gap in the field beautifully to hustle a few runs through cover. That's full from Crane, and this time Smith gets on the front foot to drive down towards the cover boundary. Joe Root gives chase, and cuts it off just inside the rope.

I've got a slab of cheesecake in the fridge that I told myself I wouldn't eat until Steve Smith was out.

I am now hungry and convinced that I'm never going to get to eat it.

A dismissive swat from Steve Smith brings a leisurely three, before Khawaja does the same from the final ball of the over,. Stuart Broad, fielding down at long leg, doesn't get much chance to enjoy the respite from bowling as he has to go charging after the ball.

Ah, and there is the change for England - Tom Curran replaces Stuart Broad.

It generally only happens at home that certain batsmen get into a really good rhythm, know their home conditions and therefore can bat for long periods.

There are only a small few doing it overseas.

Usman Khawaja plays out a very tidy maiden from James Anderson. It must be time for a change soon here from England. Anderson looks wiped.

Smith was on the ground, bat pointing in the air like a periscope, and yet the ball still hit the middle of the bat.

It reminds me of a shot Ryan Sidebottom used to play - the 'duck hook'. Ryan would play about four or five shots in one.

Four! That's superb from Khawaja. He sees Broad's short ball coming so early and rolls his wrists on another pull shot that goes whizzing away to the boundary.

Oh! What on earth was Smith trying to do there? He tries to get down low to play that sort of tennis shot pull, but he gets himself into an awful position to play it. He ends up on his backside, bat pointing up in the air. That was as ugly as ugly can be, and yet he still middled it.

This is the sort of day that shortens a bowler's career. Rocket hot, featherbed surface, ball as likely to move as Uluru. On top of that, you're bowling to Steve Smith for what feels like the umpteenth time in the series. With the Ashes long gone, this is a real test of England's desire and durability.

Another edge drops short form Usman Khawaja! He gets squared up a touch by James Anderson but he takes his hand off the bat and plays the ball down. Joe Root dives across a second slip to grab the ball, saving another four runs in the process.

Love that the universal response to a bouncer, whether you’re Steve Smith calmly swaying inside one from Stuart Broad, or me tumbling in a panicked heap on a Sunday afternoon, is to practise the ramp shot.

Shot! That's delicious from Usman Khawaja, freeing his arms and driving Stuart Broad through the covers for another boundary. Broad bends his back to try and chuck in a few surprise short balls but Khawaja, and then Smith, get their hands high above the ball and whip a couple of pull shots away.

Down the leg side goes James Anderson and Usman Khawaja finds it so easy to roll his wrists and help it on its way to the boundary.

That's better from Anderson, finding the edge of Khawaja's bat, but he plays it with soft hands and the ball skims rather morosely along the ground to slip. Anderson lets his displeasure be known with a lovely delivery that beats Khawaja's grope forward.
