  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 44.4 overs

    Morgan c Smith b Cummins 1 (Eng 287-4)

    Not over just yet?

England captain Eoin Morgan wants to get this done with quickly and goes after a wide delivery from Pat Cummins.

It was there to hit but he guides it straight to Steve Smith at backward point.

17 from 32 balls needed. Stay calm.

Joe Root has played brilliantly today.

  3. Eng 285-3published at 44 overs

    Need 20 from 36 balls

Still Andrew Tye continues with his medium-fast right-arm bowling. Jason Roy has dumped his bat and helmet in the changing room and gets an embrace from his team-mates on the sidelines before signing a couple of autographs.

Just two singles from the over. The first allows Eoin Morgan to get off the mark and the second takes Joe Root to 78.

Jonathan Fuller: Fallen in love with cricket again - perhaps men's Ashes should be like women's & be based on all formats?

The Full Toss Cricket Blog: Aussie commentators sound genuinely surprised that Eng are good at white-ball cricket. One wonders whether they do any research or follow the game generally.

I wonder if Steve Smith isn't missing a trick here. To even have a semi-sniff of victory, you've got to get Joe Root out.

James Anderson adds: He's just got Jason Roy out with a bouncer - why not try one at Root?

  6. Eng 282-3published at 43 overs

That wicket shouldn't matter. England need 23 runs from 42 balls as Eoin Morgan blocks out his first ball.

After all he has been through this winter it would be nice for Joe Root to be there at the end.

A phenomenal knock - destructive and dominant. It's been brilliant to watch.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 42.2 overs

Roy c sub (JA Richardson) b Starc 180 (Eng 281-3)

The end of the innings of Jason Roy's life.

He goes for one big shot too many and skies a pull down to fine leg where the catch is taken.

The MCG crowd stands to applaud the highest score EVER by an England batsman in one-day internationals. Quite brilliant. Roy gets a hand shake from Joe Root, David Warner and a couple of the other Australians on the way off. Enjoy the moment, Jason. He waves his bat to all corners.

You've got to take your hats off to England - they've dominated Australia, hit the fours and sixes, but most importantly they've put the fielders under pressure with their running between the wickets. I don't know what more Steve Smith could have done in terms of rotating the bowlers.

James Anderson adds: When Zampa was on, Smith kept short mid-off in for the full 10 overs, and he didn't touch the ball. Potentially you could have moved him around.

5-0 in the ODI series beats 4-0 in the Tests, right?

Andrew Tye continues under the night sky, still wicketless on his ODI debut. A play and miss from Joe Root! That may well be the first time all innings.

Much better. A textbook drive for a couple to Root.

Roy has his gloves off at the non-striker's end and seems to have a problem with his wrist after slipping. The Aussie bowlers can't get him out. Hopefully an injury won't stop him.

  12. Eng 274-2published at 41 overs

    Roy 177, Root 71

England are almost there. The required rate is down at 3.5. Jason Roy still looks as cool as anything, leaning on his bat after blocking out a yorker from Starc.

The MCG is starting to empty but there are still some chants of "we are the Army" from the English fans. They've waited all winter for this.

Roy keeps the strike with a single on the final ball. That's another record gone. Jason Roy now has the highest score by anyone in a one-day international at the MCG.

It's been better than the last few weeks! These two have been fantastic, Jason Roy in particular. What a knock it's been.

Anyone who gets 175 in a one-day game will have to ride their luck at some point, but he's played some fantastic shots and the running between the wickets has been fantastic.

James Hobbs: Considering all the chuntering after the Ashes, this performance reveals what Bayliss has brought to English cricket - vastly improved ODI/T20 teams. Would Farbrace be better at leading the Test side instead?

Christian Reilly: I remain to be convinced by "white ball experts". England has two completely different teams. Madness.

  15. champagne moment

    Eng 268-2published at 40 overs

And Jason Roy gets there! Outstanding batting. The highest score by an England player in ODI cricket. Onto 173 he goes.

It's not the most eye-catching way to get there, a mis-timed spoon into the off-side but he gets a firm handshake from Joe Root nonetheless.

    36 from 60 needed.

  16. Eng 266-2published at 39.3 overs

A couple to Root and then a single. Jason Roy back on strike. He has three more balls in this over to make England history...

  19. Eng 262-2published at 39 overs

    Roy 170, Root 67

I can't help but smile watching this Jason Roy innings and neither can Eoin Morgan. The England skipper applauds yet another Roy boundary on the sidelines with a grin on his face. So, so good. Roy is now a run short of Alex Hales' record ODI score for England.

Morgan's side need just 43 runs to win from 66 balls. A reminder this would be the highest successful chase at the MCG.

Quite right too. Joe Root was comfortably home. That takes Jason Roy to his highest score for England. The third highest score by an Englishman in ODIs.
