110 runs required from 19 overs

Brilliant running from Jason Roy and Joe Root. Starc responds to that boundary with four dot balls before the English pair nick two off the final ball of the over.

That ball hardly made it out of the 30-yard circle.

If you're just waking up after a lazy Sunday lie-in you're reading this right. England are cruising in chase of 300+ at the MCG against Australia.

That shot between his legs is known as the Natmeg, after it was played by England's Nat Sciver last year.

  3. Eng 193-2published at 30.2 overs

    The Nat-meg!

Jason Roy is getting out all of the shots. A full yorker from Mitchell Starc and Roy chops down in the ball, plays it between his legs and down to fine leg for four.

Roy loves it and has a giggle with Joe Root. Starc, less so.

Simian Swoleman: Joe Root is looking imperious; getting to 50 pretty much every time you walk out to bat in any form of the game is top drawer.

  5. Eng 189-2published at 30 overs

Need 116 runs from 20 overs

    Crunch.

England show Mitchell Marsh a bit of respect to start the over before Jason Roy has enough and swats the ball off the back foot down the ground. Aaron Finch only has five-or-so yards to move to his left to collect the ball but he can't prevent the boundary.

30 overs gone and England are well on their way. Follow that old adage of doubling your score from here and England will win this comfortably.

A new bowler for these two to look at. Mitchell Marsh comes on for a bowl as the floodlights start to take over.

It's been a composed innings from Jason Roy. There have been moments of hot-headedness, but generally he's batted well.

You've got to extend a partnership like this as long as you can, the floodlights are just starting to have an effect.

Jonathan France: The class of Root in this format is that without really doing much & just knocking it around he’s got 50! Very low risk cricket.

  10. Eng 182-2published at 29 overs

    Need 123 from 126 balls

The crowd think Root has clipped a catch straight to Steve Smith at backward point but that was a clear bump ball. Root and Smith have a chuckle towards each other.

Mitchell Starc shows he isn't all about raw pace in this first over of a new spell by digging in a slower ball bouncer before a quicker, attempted yorker. Root can't get either away and Starc's over costs just two runs.

  11. 50 runs

50 for Rootpublished at 28.1 overs

"Rooooooooot!" It's only the England fans that can be heard inside the 'G' at the moment. Young Joe greets the returning Starc with a lovely cover drive for a single and that takes him to fifty once again.

  12. Eng 180-2published at 28 overs

    Roy 107, Root 49

It's almost as if these two were nudged back into life when the required run-rate climbed back up to a run-a-ball a couple of overs ago. Since then both Roy and Root have upped the intent.

There's four more! This time Root finds the fence, giving a Zampa full toss what it deserved.

12 from the over. Roy beyond 100. Root closing on another fifty.

Fenners: Well batted Jason Roy! Just what we were missing in the Tests. Hang your heads in shame selectors.

Adam Jones: Why don’t this team also play in the Test matches? They’ve already scored more runs than the Test team manage most of the time.

Lee Meloy: If ever a passage of play summed up the mindset change in the England ODI team it was that one from Roy. Positive aggressive cricket. Great knock.

  14. Eng 172-2published at 27.1 overs

Brilliant. Just brilliant from Jason Roy.

An outrageous reverse sweep off Adam Zampa races across the Melbourne turf and to the deep point boundary.

The runs have started to flow again in the last couple of overs.

  15. Eng 168-2published at 27 overs

Back to the action after the celebration and Roy and Root add a couple of singles each. England are cruising at the moment. They know they have another gear and batsmen to come.

  16. 100 runs

100 for Roypublished at 26.3 overs

    There's the century!

It comes with a slightly mis-timed pull but Jason Roy doesn't care. That's his fourth ODI hundred and first against Australia. He leaps in the air, removes his helmet and waves his bat towards the dressing room before being hugged by a beaming Joe Root.

A brilliant knock so far. Keep going, Jason.

Greg: Roy LBW - To the naked eye the impact was way outside off. What was the umpire thinking!

  18. 6 runs

    Eng 162-2published at 26 overs

Jason Roy isn't going to die wondering. The ball after that lbw reprieve he smashes Adam Zampa down the ground for six! There was a man on the rope at long on but it carried a couple of yards over his head.

That's a little risky but might be a decent plan for Roy. He has looked more comfortable on the attack in this innings.

    Onto 97 he goes...

  19. Not outpublished at 25.2 overs

And breathe. Jason Roy survives in the nervous nineties for now. He was way outside the line as he played defensively to that googly.

Joe Root told him to review straight away and the Test skipper was right.

  20. England reviewpublished at 25.2 overs

Jason Roy given out lbw to Zampa! The Aussies are confident but Jason Roy is not convinced. He thinks a big stride might have saved him. He calls for a review.
