  1. Eng 72-2published at 8 overs

    Roy 46, Root 6

Cummins continues, finding lift and pace, with Root playing and missing. That was close to the edge.

Shot! Root moves his feet well, getting in behind and punching it through long on for four.

The number four then flicks into leg for a couple more.

  2. Eng 66-2published at 7 overs

    Need 239 more to win

Roy clips off his pads for two before standing tall and battering Starc back over his head for a one-bounce four.

The England opener has raced to 46 - one more blow for 50...

Ooft! That could've been it but Roy's punchy straight drive clatters into the stumps at the non-striker's end.

You'd say the most effective England bowler today was Mark Wood, so there's pace in that pitch. Australia have got 10 overs of Starc and 10 overs of Cummins, then some medium pace from the likes of Marsh, Stoinis and Tye.

  4. Eng 60-2published at 6 overs

Joe Root is the new man in for England. Can the Test captain anchor this innings?

That was a good short ball. It just kept tailing back into Hales.

Hales' feet hadn't got moving. He wanted to have that positive intent but couldn't get moving.

  6. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 5.5 overs

    Hales c Stoinis b Cummins 4 (Eng 60-2)

Cummins rushes Hales, who miscues his pull shot straight up, with Stoinis completing a comfortable catch at short mid-wicket.

Hales didn't look settled in his first two balls and was perhaps too desperate to attack just the third ball he faced.

A fine start for England in terms of runs, but Australia will be delighted with two early wickets.

  7. Eng 60-1published at 5.4 overs

Roy clips off his toes, using Cummins' pace to fire it out towards the boundary, but the chasing fielders do well to limit the opener to three.

This is great fun to watch. That was an agricultural hack from Hales but they are trying to make the most of the powerplay.

  9. Eng 57-1published at 5 overs

Here is Alex Hales to join his previous opening partner.

And Hales is in the action immediately, slapping a cross-bat shot down through long-on to the fence.

    That was a nothing shot.

Bairstow will be frustrated with that. He flirted. He didn't throw the bat at it.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 4.4 overs

    Bairstow c Paine b Starc 14 (Eng 53-1)

Breakthrough for Australia and Jonny Bairstow will be livid with himself.

It's a solid but unspectacular delivery from Mitch Starc, but Bairstow just hangs his bat out at it indecisively, getting a fine edge through to Tim Paine.

It hit the top edge behind Bairstow while he was still in the act of pulling the bat around, showing he hadn't really committed to the cut shot.

  13. Eng 53-0published at 4.3 overs

Starc fires one a long way outside off and is duly called for a wide.

Eek. First false shot from Roy, trying to work it into leg and getting a leading edge...but the opener sees it lands safely.

England's 50 is up in 26 balls. Can you believe this?

The Duckworth-Lewis par-score at the end of this over would be 19.

  15. Eng 51-0published at 4.2 overs

Starc over-pitches and Roy drives it back down the ground through mid-on to the fence.

England have brought the 50 up off just 26 balls.

  16. Eng 47-0published at 4.1 overs

Starc finally gets one to tail in and it hits Roy's pads. A strangled appeal from the Aussies but nothing doing. Perhaps pitching outside leg but definitely missing leg stump.

At the moment 304 is looking inadequate.

  18. Eng 47-0published at 4 overs

Short and wide from Cummins and Roy plays an upwards scything cut shot over the in-field. He doesn't quite get all of it so has to settle for three.

A play and miss from Bairstow to a similar short delivery to finish.

I love shots like that. Jason Roy has just flicked it through a gap.

  20. Eng 44-0published at 3.3 overs

That is simply gorgeous. Cummins drifts into Roy's pads and the opener rolls his wrists on it, flicking the ball away through mid-wicket to the fence.
