England have their chance for revenge against the Australians at Melbourne on Saturday so please join the team for that one from 08:00 GMT. But from me, cheerio now.

As the great Barry Davies said of Paul Gascoigne's majestic free-kick for Spurs against Arsenal in 1991, it was "true Schoolboys' Own stuff" as Maxwell both won the match and recorded his century with a six.

  4. Highlightspublished at 12:28 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

England will rue their failure to build on a position of 60-1 after six overs and then reducing Australia to 4-2 in the first over after those fine early strikes from David Willey. Another key moment came in the eighth over at 74-2 when Maxwell was dropped by Alex Hales. How he made them pay for that.

A second T20 century for Glenn Maxwell then in his 40th match and it came from 58 balls with 10 fours and four sixes. He has one ODI century from 81 matches and in the Test format one from seven.

  6. Postpublished at 12:19 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

Australia skipper Steve Smith is rested for the series but he is watching on. And how much does he wish he had included 'the big show' at the start of the ODI series instead of just for the final match?

Australia captain David Warner: "The way Glenn played was fantastic and we know if he faces 50 balls, he gets 100 every game."

  8. Postpublished at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

England captain Eoin Morgan on the controversy surrounding Maxwell's reprieve on 59, when the soft signal for the catch by Roy was out: "It looked out but I fully accept the decision was overturned, ultimately the third umpire is always right. Maxwell played very well and took the game away from us."

  9. Postpublished at 12:13 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

England captain Eoin Morgan: "We got off to a reasonable start but losing six wickets for 30 or 40 runs cost us. The risks we took were right, but the execution of the shots wasn't. We were 30 or 40 runs short."

  10. Man of the matchpublished at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2018

Australia's Glenn Maxwell, speaking at the close-of-play presentation: "It's been great to transfer my Sheffield Shield form into the Big Bash and now this tri-series. That's the most pleasing aspect for me. I told Carey to get two off the first ball because I didn't have much left, but he gloved one and told me to go and get the hundred."

Credit to Australia, who outplayed England. With the ball, they took wickets in the middle after taking pace off the ball. England were poor today though.

So two out of two in Australia in the series, with New Zealand and England both suffering defeats in their opening games. The meeting between England and the Kiwis in Wellington on Tuesday looks set to be a key one but England have to play Australia again before that.

AUSTRALIA WIN BY 5 WICKETSpublished at 18.3 overs

You just knew he would do it with a six. Arms aloft, it was a suitably magnificent finale, a towering pull over mid-wicket. Australia's match and Maxwell the hero with a fabulous unbeaten 103 in addition to his 3-10 with the ball. I think we know who the man-of-the-match will be.
