There are 12 overs remaining today, but I'm not convinced they'll get all of those in. If you're New Zealand, would you bring a spinner on to keep them out there, or take the light?

Could be a real nail-biter of a match. How's the weather forecast looking for days four and five?

Here's the BBC forecast for Christchurch - looks pretty sunny, but they may have problems with the light in the evenings.

Wagner strays down leg and Root flicks off the pads for one.

It's getting a bit dark out there.

Shot! Dawid Malan gets off the mark in fine style, rifling a hook shot to the fence.

Trent Boult pitches it up in reply and Malan defends down to mid-on.

England's lead is up to 200.

This England team's forgotten how to win away from home.

The one time I feel Vince was robbed was at Perth, when he got that unplayable delivery, but everywhere else he keeps nicking off.

Joe Root tucks through backward square for one to bring new man Dawid Malan on strike.

The Middlesex batsman covers up and defends the rest of Neil Wagner's over.

The selectors, and his family and friends, will be tearing their hair out. It's agonisingly close to a hundred, again. They know he's better than this. Will 76 be enough [to keep him in the side] ?

The trap was set, Vince went for it. and it's a good catch by Ross Taylor at slip. If you've seen him dismissed before in Test cricket, you'll know it.

    It's just so exasperating.

Trent Boult sends it across James Vince, who flashes hard at it and nicks off to first slip. Again.

It's cricket's version of Groundhog Day.

At least this time Vince made a potentially pivotal 76 before getting out in that most hope-crushingly familiar of ways.

Drinks on board and it will be Trent Boult to continue.

Joe Root drives through the covers for one and James Vince slices through the vacant gully area for another.

Boult sends down a full one and Root squirts it through third man for one more.

I was just thinking about Root's last declaration, at Headingley - it was chased down.

Graeme Swann adds: That game will have put the frighteners up Joe. And one of the first times he captained Yorkshire, they set Middlesex over 400 at Lord's and they chased them down.

This was the game - though it wasn't a declaration, Middlesex scored 472-3 to win.

All change for New Zealand as Neil Wagner enters the fray.

He unsurprisingly goes short but its down the leg side and Root swivels it away past fine leg for four.

Good over for England - seven from it as they add three more singles.

    And that'll be drinks.

Root's trying to up the ante a bit, but New Zealand are bowling well at the moment.

Barring the first innings at Auckland, when he looked half-asleep, his energy levels are always up when he goes in to bat.

  19. Eng 155-2published at 50 overs

That's not the one, Joe. The England skipper tries to play a late cut to a ball from the returning Trent Boult that isn't quite short enough and slides just underneath his bat.

A prod to cover brings Vince on strike and he adds another couple, swinging it away to fine leg.
