  1. dropped catch

Stoneman dropped on 48published at 35.5 overs

Stoneman doesn't settle and flashes again outside off stump - this time the ball catches the edge and flies towards Ross Taylor in the slips - down!

Taylor should have gone with two hands but he went with one and the ball pops in and out of his outstretched right hand.

    Big let off for Stoneman.

  2. Eng 119-1published at 35.4 overs

Mark Stoneman gets the first runs after tea off Colin de Grandhomme, glancing through gully for what turns about to be a risky two. Had the throw been right above the stumps, Stoneman was struggling.

He edges the next but it's along the ground through vacant first slip to the fence.

The Surrey man then chases a very wide on. Settle down.

    Almost time for cricket again.

New Zealand stride back out at Hagley Oval, soon followed by Mark Stoneman and James Vince.

Another intriguing, crucial session in store. Here we go...

We've seen a very benign pitch, a ball which is getting older and softer, and while Sodhi has gone past the edge of the bat, he's not quite accurate enough for Test cricket as there's one loose ball an over.

England will probably want to score a little faster in this session - but if they get all the overs in and score at 3.5, they'll be 250-260 ahead at the close.

Ish Sodhi has shown there is some turn in this pitch now. Jack Leach should be licking his lips - it looks like he is going to get a decent total to bowl at.

Bishop: Been plenty of players England got rid of too early (especially batsmen) - don't think we need to cut our greatest off too quick.

Jonathan Barton: We can't find someone to partner Cook, let alone replace him! 12,000 Test runs buys you time in my opinion. He will know when it's time to retire better than anyone.

Mark Stoneman and James Vince have both been impressive, given they know what is riding on their innings.

By the end of play, if Vince has got a century, I'll be a very happy man because I like him in this England team.

Losing Cook aside, that's a very good session for England. Both of these players are in - they need to convert this start into a big score and get England to a healthy lead.

It'll be Jack Skelton to take you through to the close.

Ish Sodhi gives the ball plenty of flight, but Mark Stoneman can't be tempted into anything outlandish.

Kane Williamson attempts to gee his players up from his vantage point at mid-wicket, before Sodhi completes his over. And that, folks, is tea.

He and Vince then work a single each to keep things moving along.

A beautiful stroke - James Vince goes to fifty with his trademark shot. Can he go on? It's funny how Ben Stokes not being able to bowl has played into Vince being handed this lifeline.

That's a fine delivery from Ish Sodhi, getting one to turn and bounce past James Vince's outside edge as he presses forward. That stayed low, too.

A bit of dragged down rubbish is given the treatment three deliveries later, though, as Vince carts him through mid-wicket.

I want Mark Stoneman to show he can breeze past 50 and go on, upping his scoring rate.

Four! A swivel pull from James Vince and a diving Trent Boult on the boundary can't cut it off.

A better bouncer from Neil Wagner sits up for Vince to hoick for one. A Stoneman push then brings up England's hundred.
