    Lead by 181

Root pushes it to mid-wicket and scurries a quick single to bring 150 up for England.

Vince has been stranded on 70 for a while but finally adds a couple more to his tally with a flick round the corner.

We still have the situation where only four bowlers have taken the first 22 wickets in the match. I'm not being unkind, but I think De Grandhomme could bowl for another week and not get one, although they've dropped a couple.

  3. Eng 149-2published at 48 overs

    Vince 70, Root 2

Root walks at De Grandhomme and works the ball through mid-wicket for one.

The shadows are lengthening at Hagley Oval. There should be 21 overs remaining in the day. I don't think we'll get them all in.

Will Hale: Would love to see Vince ton up and secure his spot. Undoubtedly oozes class, hopefully a ton will give him the confidence he requires to make the number three spot his own.

Will Root get the chance to declare? They normally look to have four-and-a-half sessions to bowl someone out.

But they'll want to set a target over 400. They've got to get the runs first.

James Vince defends the rest of the over.

  7. Eng 148-2published at 05:23 British Summer Time 1 April 2018

England captain Joe Root is off the mark straight away, flicking it off his legs round the corner for one.

A wild slash outside off stump - he'll be dejectedly returning with his highest Test score. Not a good dismissal - it was a delivery he could have left, and with no foot movement, he got an edge, Watling took off and took it.

I don't think Joe Root's come in with so many runs on the board for a long time.

    Stoneman c Watling b Southee 60 (Eng 147-2)

    It had been coming.

Tim Southee hangs one out wide and Mark Stoneman flashes at it again but this time he does nick it.

BJ Watling leaps to his left to take a fine catch above his head.

A Test best score of 60 for Stoneman but he'll be livid. He has looked ropey since tea and could easily have left that well alone.

Colin de Grandhomme bends his back and bangs down a short ball that is called wide on height.

James Vince then plays a loose drive and inside edges it into his pads. De Grandhomme grimaces.

Stoneman has looked less secure than Vince - he's been dropped twice, has played and missed a few more times, and has scored more slowly. But he's looking more fluent now than he's done at any other time in the series - he scored a patchy 50 in Auckland, but his stock is rising. He looked good in the first two or three Tests of the Ashes without scoring many runs.

  12. Eng 145-1published at 45 overs

Stoneman slaps it through point for the solitary run off Southee's latest over.

De Grandhomme could do with a wicket - he batted well in this game, but he's still looking for his first wicket of the series.

Vince guides it through third man for two more to move onto 70.

There have been a couple of chances, but this has been the ideal second-wicket partnership for England.

It's the second chance Stoneman has given in that region.

  17. dropped catch

Stoneman dropped on 57published at 43.1 overs

Mark Stoneman is dropped for a second time since tea as he continues to live a charmed life.

Once again he flashes at one outside off from Colin de Grandhomme and the ball flies high off the edge.

It's a tough chance but Tim Southee gets his hands to it but can only parry the ball up and away like a goalkeeper tipping it over the bar.

It seems Southee was only in the slips because Ross Taylor is off the field, having injured himself by falling awkwardly as he spilled Stoneman earlier on.

Vince has translated his finesse to Test cricket but looks fallible, whereas Ramprakash couldn't translate his county fluency or success to Test level.

A better over from Tim Southee, bowling a fuller length on a tighter line around off stump.

James Vince can't beat the in-field and plays out a maiden.
