The new ball is available but New Zealand haven't taken it yet.

Colin de Grandhomme will carry on with the old one.

Curious - is it to give Trent Boult and Tim Southee a bit more rest after their early spells today? Or is Kane Williamson happy just not conceding quick runs?

Malan has looked good. He looked terrible in the first innings and in Auckland but everything's functioning a lot better now. He looks more fluent.

Neil Wagner will bowl the final over before the new ball.

Dawid Malan rides the bounce and guides the ball out through the covers for a couple.

The one I do remember and that is spoken of fondly is the 450 we got to lose a Test match against England at Trent Bridge in 1973. We dined out on that - oh, we only got beaten by 39 runs!

New Zealand's second highest Test run chase is 317-7 against Bangladesh in Chittagong in 2008.

Aaron Redmond scored 79 and Daniel Vettori made 76.

De Grandhomme goes round the wicket at Malan, who leaves the first three balls outside off.

He defends the next and drives the fifth just inside mid-on for one.

Root plays the last back to the bowler and stays on 49.

I know we need quick runs but I think England are playing this smartly. Batsmen get their eye in again ahead of what will be a big new ball threat, wear the Kiwis down and build a platform for the blasters to come in later in the day. The likes of Stokes and Bairstow can put a 100 on the board in no time!

    Root 49, Malan 40

Wagner goes full and Root drives it square to scurry two, moving onto 49.

A full toss follows and Root just about picks it up to tap it safely into the off side for no run.

Two overs until the new ball.

Bad light could come into play today and tomorrow - there's the expectation there will be some cloud cover.

Five dots for De Grandhomme before he strays onto the pads and Malan clips it away for one.

The April Fools I remember from being a kid was the spaghetti tree.

When I was at the Observer, they did one about Somerset seriously considering signing Russell Crowe, who was a cousin of Martin. The club got rung up by several people inquiring about this!

Daniel Stevanato: Re: Rob Meech: Are you sure England have made a "watchful" start? 35 runs in the first nine overs of the day by my reckoning, just shy of four runs per over. Seems more than reasonable.

Less short stuff than usual from Wagner as Root and Malan pick up a single apiece.

Solid work from this pair so far this morning - adding 37 in 10 overs.

Double change as New Zealand do finally give Boult and Southee a rest before the new ball is available - here's Neil Wagner into the attack.

I'm actually OK if we go for it, but lose. No one will remember "the great draw" after eight losses.

Still no Ish Sodhi - here comes Colin de Grandhomme.

It's tidy enough from the big man, Joe Root just picking up one by clipping through backward square.

I think we've got two captains in this game who don't really understand how best to utilise their spinners. With different captains, who have grown up with spin at their counties or state sides, we'd have seen a lot more overs from Sodhi and Leach.

Joe Gibney: With the current wicket-taking score at opening bowlers 23, the others nil, just see off the stars then help yourself.

Rob Meech: You can always rely on England to make a watchful start when they’re in need of quick runs...

Shot! Malan rolls his wrists and cracks a pull stroke to the fence.

Tim Southee will continue - I get that New Zealand need early wickets but surely him and Trent Boult should be off and kept back for the new ball soon?
