This has been a good performance from Jonny Bairtsow - he stopped England subsiding again and now he's accelerating as best he can.

Mind you, he comes close to getting run out at the non striker's end. Trent Boult leaps and throws the ball in one sweet move at mid-wicket but the ball takes a deflection off Bairstow's bat as he turns to ground it.

Runs are coming thick and fast now. Bairstow has taken this by the scruff of its neck.

Wallop! Another crunching boundary from Jonny Bairstow, this time giving himself room and carving the ball through the covers.

Just the 16 from that over...

  4. Eng 342-8published at 104.5 overs

A dot ball stems the flow of runs temporarily for Trent Boult.

  5. Eng 342-8published at 104.4 overs

Four! That's 12 runs from four balls for Jonny Bairstow, as he swivels to help a leggy short ball on it's way down to the boundary.

There are some spits and spots of rain falling in the distance.

    Bairstow 27, Leach 9

The ground staff are lurking just off the field.

Not that it's going to worry Jonny Bairstow. That'll be another four, this time a wristy pull shot that goes racing to the boundary. Some terrific running adds another two to the total.

Colin de Grandhomme had time but only one stump to aim at. He pulls his floppy hat over his face disconsolately after missing.

Jack Leach opens the face of the bat and slides a couple away through point. Ooft, he almost gets run out, too!

Jonny Bairstow calls him through for a quick single and Leach is miles out of his ground as Colin de Grandhomme shies from mid-wicket. It's not that far away, but teh ball bounces past the stumps, and Leach survives.

Colin de Grandhomme's going to have a rest. He's got figures of 26-2-94-4.

I wonder how important Jonny Bairstow being given not out when he got a tiny nick on a Trent Boult delivery will be.

A single is the only damage from Boult's latest over.

Colin de Grandhomme is an amiable fellow but it's hard to interview a man for the radio who is nodding his answers.

Jack Leach drives through the covers to pick up three, before he and Jonny Bairstow exchange a series of singles.

Bairstow then throws his hands through a cut shot and gets enough bat on it to help it away for four. Kane Williamson leaps at gully but not even he can get a hand on that one.

    Ten off the over!

Provided the weather stays good, the draw is now out of the equation and that adds a little spice to the proceedings.

New Zealand's highest successful Test run chase, courtesy of stats guru Andrew Samson, is 324. That was against Pakistan in Christchurch in 1994.

England's lead is currently 344 and counting. How much longer can they afford to give themselves? I've no doubt light will become an issue today and tomorrow. It's already a bit murky.

    Wood b de Grandhomme 9 (Eng 312-8)

Colin de Grandhomme gets the last laugh once again!

Oopsie. A big swing and a miss from Mark Wood, as the ball nips between bat and pad and crashes into the stumps. It's full, nipping in and Wood just misses it, his off stump wobbling around rather forlornly.
