    Target 382

Jeet Raval hasn't got into double figures against England yet. He's had some decent scores recently, though - 88 against South Africa and 84 against West Indies.

A push down the ground adds another couple to Tom Latham's total, before a very good bit of judgement sees a delivery just whip past his off stump.

Jeet Raval is playing his best cricket at the non-striker's end.

  3. NZ 7-0published at 3 overs

Tom Latham plays a short ball from James Anderson with soft hands, and nabs a couple as it rolls through gully.

A thick edge and sharp reactions brings Latham a single.

Leaving the ball is a forward defensive shot where you don't use the bat. It's so important to leave well as an opening batsman.

  5. NZ 4-0published at 2 overs

Stuart Broad shares the new ball. The telly are showing a slo-mo of the pressure his feet and ankles go through as he comes in to bowl. He's cut a hole in his left boot for his big toe.

Jeet Raval has consecutive nibbles at two good deliveries from Broad, the ball just nipping past the outside edge. Oh, and again!

    A very good maiden.

Arn: Bairstow is completely wasted batting at seven. No support at all from Broad and can't rely on Wood, Leach, Anderson to hang around any length of time regularly. Bairstow good enough for top five.

Mark: Bairstow has to bat higher than this in future Tests. He is currently our best batsman and always has to deal with a collapse going on around him.

    Need 378 to win

I like this field. It's set to try and entice Tom Latham to go for an early drive, which is how he fell in the first innings.

Latham resists the temptation, and ignores the rest of the over.

From what we saw after lunch with the new ball and the way it behaved, I'm fully expecting Stuart Broad and James Anderson to create some difficult moments in these early overs.

Four from the first ball of the over!

James Anderson immediately starts prodding at the footholes. It's on Tom Latham's pads and he just steers it around the corner to get the Black Caps off the mark.

James Anderson to Tom Latham then.

    Here we go...

England are making their way on to the field, followed by New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Jeet Raval.

Joe Root calls his players together for a last-minute huddle.

England have up to 137 overs to bowl New Zealand out. I don't think we'll get all of those with the light.

England have got enough. They've played it quite well and will now have an hour to bowl before tea and another go with the new ball after.

Get six or seven wickets today and this game is as good as won.

England have got plenty of runs to play with here, and these are good conditions to be bowling in with a new ball.

Plus, New Zealand's openers haven't really enjoyed themselves in this series so far. Tea is only an hour away...

Neil Wagner let out a Tarzan-like shout there. Drinks start to come out but are sent back as Joe Root has declared. I think that's a smart call.

Jonny Bairstow holes out - and England have declared!

New Zealand will need 382 to win, or to survive a day and a half to draw and win the series 1-0.

Bairstow falls trying to accelerate the run rate, taking on a short delivery from Neil Wagner and sending it down Tom Latham's throat as he comes darting in from the boundary.

On Twitter:, external Loving the Kiwi commentators willing England to declare ten minutes after saying a 350 chase makes NZ favourites, while reminding us of bad light and the easy nature of the pitch. This is mind games with sinister (albeit politely delivered) trolling par excellence.

Joe Root, who has his jumper on over his training gear, has just leaned out of the dressing room and passed a message on to Chris Woakes.

Presumably, Woakes will be running out with drinks and a message very shortly. In the meantime, Neil Wagner is going to replace Trent Boult.

Jack Leach! That's a lovely cut from the spinner, topped off with an extravagent whirl of the wrists.

Tim Southee does not look a well man. He's the same shade of green that Joe Root was in the Sydney Test.
