Got a feeling the Barmy Army and fans will take to Jack Leach in the same manner as previous slow left-armers we've had in Monty, Giles and Tuffers. All characters in their own right who became fan favourites even with their flaws. Showed true guts and character with the bat on debut to support JB and now a first fully deserved Test wicket after being the best spinner on the county scene the past few seasons. Hopefully the first of many!

Target 382
More testing and teasing work from Leach, inducing Latham into edging it just past Stokes at slip for a couple.

If New Zealand are going to get into a position to save the game, they've got two batsmen in for whom this is their home ground, they've batted here a lot.
Latham 46, Nicholls 9
Tidy stuff from Root but Nicholls picks up three more runs.

dukkhaboy: Root brings himself on before Mark Wood. Is this Wood’s last ever Test match?
Richard Balmforth: Root and Leach on within the hour. A tactic to try and get as many overs in as possible before the light deteriorates tonight?
Latham unfurls that sweep shot and gets it away to the boundary. It was a bit uppish though.
Four more as Latham slices it through the off side to the fence.

New Zealand are now in the position where they're not even thinking about the target at this stage. As left-handers, Latham and Nicholls are going to struggle with Leach as those footmarks are dinner plate-sized and he's already hit them a couple of times.
Latham 38, Nicholls 6
Nicholls drives into the covers and scurries two after a misfield.
And that's four! Nicholls rocks back and clatters it through point to the fence. That was too short from Root.
With two left-handers in and plenty of footholes to aim at, Joe Root is going to give himself a bowl...

Sophie: Things I should be doing because I have to work tomorrow: going to bed. Things I am not doing: going to bed.
Ray Gritt: Perfect field placement from Joe Root! Well done Jack Leach! Hopefully the first of many in your international career!

Leach is the type of bowler that Latham likes to sweep. He likes the sweep shot, but sometimes it can get him into a spot of bother.
Leach 6-2-13-1
Lovely over from Leach, targeting the footholes just outside Latham's off stump.
The Kiwi inside edges the last into his pads to cries of anguish from England's close catchers.
A maiden for Leach.

What a start! I don't think there's any doubt that Broad has been the best English bowler in these two Tests. He's managed to get the ball to seam, and to move away from the batsman - Vince should have caught that catch though.

As promised - and taken by the phone of Graeme Swann! - here is the England slip cordon. Proper cricket!
Stuart Broad continues with a very attacking field and concedes just one off the over, Tom Latham knocking it into the covers and scampering a risky single.
Substitute fielder Liam Livingstone's throw was wide of the stumps though.

That's 158 Test catches now for Alastair Cook, He's gone above Mark Taylor, up to ninth on the all-time list., external

Bradley Cross: So happy for Jack Leach.
Viv: Was just off to bed, now I've just made an espresso. What a brilliant start.

Just in case this is my last stint on the BBC today, I'd like to thank you all for your company.
Target 382
Henry Nicholls is the new man in and defends the last.
Ross Taylor will not want to see a replay of his dismissal. He fell into an obvious trap.
Massive celebration as Leach was mobbed by his team-mates for that wicket, lovely to see.
