It's inconceivable that Taylor didn't know where the fielder was.

What an error from an experienced player. It's pitched on off stump, the man was back looking to save runs but Root brought him up to a catching position, the shot was exactly the same and Cook took the catch. A disastrous start for New Zealand.

    Taylor c Cook b Leach 13 (NZ 66-3)

Jack Leach has his first wicket in Test cricket!

But what is Ross Taylor doing? Such a soft dismissal.

The Kiwi tries to lap sweep it round the corner but ends up looping it straight to Alastair Cook at short fine leg.

He'd scored a single off the first ball of the over with same shot when Cook was back but Joe Root then brought him up. A near perfect start for England.

Root is not fielding in the slips after he was struck on the gloves in the final over of the penultimate day at Eden Park.

Dan Nixon: Fair play to Kane Williamson. When you know it’s going to make your team's day even harder to endure & it’s only the second ball of the day, to admit you feathered it & to walk off is a lesson of how to play the game. Sometimes you just get a good ball.

    Latham 34, Taylor 12

Broad sends down six testing deliveries to Latham but the Kiwi opener leaves and defends well. A maiden.

I was once on a hat-trick, playing for the under-13s. First wicket - lbw. Second wicket - caught at point. My third ball - feathered edge... put down by the keeper. Still seething 25 years later!

I'm pleased to see Leach has a point fielder in rather than extra cover. He needs to encourage them to drive - Latham has a big gap through the gate already.

  9. NZ 64-2published at 29 overs

Leach drags his first ball down short and wide and Latham slaps it away for four.

The Somerset spinner gives it a bit more flight and Latham manages to push it out through the covers for a couple more.

Better stuff from Leach in response, just another single off the over.

  12. Broad hides his frustrationpublished at 23:57 British Summer Time 2 April 2018

Broady has been blamed in the past for getting annoyed with fielders. Stuart, Ryan Sidebottom and I used to get hauled over the coals for that. He could have easily let a roar of frustration out, but he walked a long way around extra cover to hide his frustration.

  13. NZ 57-2published at 28 overs

Taylor was able to scramble two after that drop.

And that won't improve Broad's mood as Taylor clatters him through the covers for four. Got him driving, though.

It was definitely a drop - Vince diving in front of second slip. Not the easiest one in the world, but it should be taken at Test level. The one he dropped last night was probably only a three out of 10 chance.

But, if you're going to be a slip fielder, you've got to take 80% of catches like the one he's just dropped.

  15. dropped catch

Taylor dropped on sixpublished at 27.4 overs

Chance and down! Broad gets Taylor fending at one and nicking it in between third and second slip.

James Vince at third slip goes across to try and snaffle the catch but shells it low to his left.

Tough but gettable. Big let off for Taylor.

  16. NZ 51-2published at 27.3 overs

Latham nudges a single to square leg off the first ball of Broad's over. "Here you go, Ross."

Can Broad get Taylor for the 11th time in Tests? England keep an ultra-attacking field to try and help him...

David Wood: I think the Indian quick bowler (Pathan/Patel?) took a hat-trick with the first three balls of the match v Pakistan about 10-15 years ago? And then India lost the match!

Andrew Samson on TMS: It was Irfan Pathan in Karachi in 2006, external - with the fourth, fifth and sixth balls of the match.

    Target 382

Latham tucks off his hip to bring up the 50 for New Zealand.

Anderson gets a go at Taylor then but the Kiwi number four defends the rest of the over.

Ruth Brooksbank: On this day in 2004, Matthew Hoggard took a hat-trick at Barbados - I remember because it's my birthday. Thought Broad was going to do the same, but I'll make do with England's bowlers taking 10 wickets between them.

That looked like a bit of reverse swing - it certainly swung the other way than the shiny side implied.
