And that's the soggy end to a disappointing day in the County Championship.

We had five games abandoned without a ball bowled, while a grand total of 52.1 overs were sent down in the three games that did get out into the middle.

Both Sussex and Hampshire got off to good starts in the damp, while Middlesex had a tougher time of things.

It's too wet at Lord's to continue. Stevie Eskinazi (31 not out) and Hilton Cartwright (0 not out) will return tomorrow morning to try and rebuild.

The umpires' decision means all eight games have finished for the day.

They're going to give it another go at Lord's, with an inspection set for 16:40 BST after the rain eased off in London.

They managed 21 overs at Hove - the best effort of any of the eight games - but they've called it a day now.

Phil Salt (54 not out) and Luke Wells (25 not out) will resume tomorrow.

It's just Middlesex v Glamorgan which hasn't been abandoned for the day now.

Just the 15 overs possible on day one between Hampshire and defending champions Essex. Joe Weatherley (22*) and Jimmy Adams (19*) batted well in the hour of play, reaching 41-0 before the weather intervened.

The rain starts to fall in St John's Wood and Stevie Eskinazi (31*) and Hilton Cartwright (0*) head for the pavilion.

They've penciled in a pitch inspection for 15:00 BST at Taunton, where the rain has eased off, but has left a wet outfield.

Chances of play don't sound great, but the groundsmen will do their best.

Unfortunately it is just the one game at the moment as it is looking pretty miserable elsewhere around the country.

Two games have already been called off for the day - Northants v Durham and Leicestershire v Derbyshire - while the forecast is not looking good in general.

The hover-cover is coming off at Lord's after lunch and we will have at least some cricket to enjoy this afternoon.

It's England's Dawid Malan and Stevie Eskinazi at the crease.

Credit Andy Mackay, the Sussex groundsman, and his team who, despite a wet night, managed to get play under way on time at 11:00.

Chris Dent then decided to bowl first a decision he may be regretting as Sussex raced to 86-0 before rain returned just after 12:30.

Phil Salt led the Sussex charge attacking the bowling at every opportunity reaching his second first class half century off 60 balls including one huge six over over square leg.

Luke Wells has been more sedate in reaching 25 and Sussex will hoping the weather clears to allow them to build on an excellent start.

Just 12 overs have been bowled at Lord's in the first session, with Middlesex losing both openers in difficult conditions.

One over at 11:00 was followed by a 70-minute break, even though the rain lasted far less than that.

Max Holden was caught behind off Lukas Carey for 7, while Sam Robson played around one from Michael Hogan for 17.

England Test batsman Dawid Malan and Stevie Eskinazi lasted until lunch at 46-2.
