  1. Good byepublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

And that's the soggy end to a disappointing day in the County Championship.

We had five games abandoned without a ball bowled, while a grand total of 52.1 overs were sent down in the three games that did get out into the middle.

Both Sussex and Hampshire got off to good starts in the damp, while Middlesex had a tougher time of things.

I'll be back tomorrow from 10:45 BST with Josh Hunt to try again. In the meantime keep your fingers crossed for some better weather.

  2. Stumps at Lord'spublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Middlesex 64-3 (16.1 overs) v Glamorgan

It's too wet at Lord's to continue. Stevie Eskinazi (31 not out) and Hilton Cartwright (0 not out) will return tomorrow morning to try and rebuild.

The umpires' decision means all eight games have finished for the day.

  3. 16:40 BST inspection at Lord'spublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Middlesex 64-3 (16.1 overs) v Glamorgan

They're going to give it another go at Lord's, with an inspection set for 16:40 BST after the rain eased off in London.

  4. Close of play at Hovepublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Sussex 86-0 v Gloucestershire

They managed 21 overs at Hove - the best effort of any of the eight games - but they've called it a day now.

Phil Salt (54 not out) and Luke Wells (25 not out) will resume tomorrow.

It's just Middlesex v Glamorgan which hasn't been abandoned for the day now.

  5. Early tea at Hovepublished at 15:30 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Sussex 86-0 v Gloucestershire

They've called an early tea at Hove, with the faint hopes of getting back out later fading.

  6. Day one abandoned at the Ageas Bowlpublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Hampshire 41-0 v Essex

    Six down, two to go.

Just the 15 overs possible on day one between Hampshire and defending champions Essex. Joe Weatherley (22*) and Jimmy Adams (19*) batted well in the hour of play, reaching 41-0 before the weather intervened.

    We will try again tomorrow.

  7. Postpublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

For those of you who aren't keeping count, it's just Hampshire v Essex at the Ageas Bowl, Middlesex v Glamorgan at Lord's and Sussex v Gloucestershire at Hove which haven't been abandoned for the day yet.

I'll keep you updated of any rain-related news.

  8. Day one abandoned at Tauntonpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

Somerset v Yorkshire - no play on day one, rain

And another one bites the dust. That's five of eight games abandoned now.

The umpires have been out into the middle and decided to call it a day in Taunton, where rain has meant no play has been possible.

  9. Day one abandoned at Old Traffordpublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

Lancashire v Surrey - no play on day one, rain

That's it for our fourth game of the day. They've called it off at Old Trafford without a ball being bowled on day one.

Mark Church's emojis were spot-on (see 13:40 post).

So with no cricket being played I'll leave it there for now.

I'll continue to bring you any news of abandonments, pitch inspections and, who knows, maybe some play, as it comes in.

I hope you've got something else to keep you occupied for now.

  11. Play abandoned at New Roadpublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

Worcestershire v Nottinghamshire - day one abandoned

More bad news. They've called time at New Road, where the rain has prevented a single ball from being bowled.

    They'll try again tomorrow.

  12. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Lord'spublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Middlesex 64-3 (16.1 overs) v Glamorgan

And that could well be that for the time-being.

The rain starts to fall in St John's Wood and Stevie Eskinazi (31*) and Hilton Cartwright (0*) head for the pavilion.

WICKET Malan (c Selman b Hogan) 5published at 13:55 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Middlesex 58-3 v Glamorgan

England batsman Dawid Malan returned to the County Championship hoping to find some form, but he fails on his first attempt.

The left-hander pushes hard at an angled ball from Michael Hogan, edging into the hands of Nick Selman at second slip.

  14. 15:00 BST inspection at Tauntonpublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

Somerset v Yorkshire - match delayed, rain

They've penciled in a pitch inspection for 15:00 BST at Taunton, where the rain has eased off, but has left a wet outfield.

Chances of play don't sound great, but the groundsmen will do their best.

  15. rain stops play

Rain rain go awaypublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

Unfortunately it is just the one game at the moment as it is looking pretty miserable elsewhere around the country.

Two games have already been called off for the day - Northants v Durham and Leicestershire v Derbyshire - while the forecast is not looking good in general.

I'll keep you posted if there is any news.

It's England's Dawid Malan and Stevie Eskinazi at the crease.

  17. Postpublished at 13:40 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

Thanks to Gary Smee for guiding us through what is likely to be the first frustrating session of many over the next four days.

I'm here for this afternoon's session, which may well follow the format of the tweet from BBC Radio London's Mark Church below.

    Let's see how we go.

  18. Groundsman's work pays off for Sussexpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

Credit Andy Mackay, the Sussex groundsman, and his team who, despite a wet night, managed to get play under way on time at 11:00.

Chris Dent then decided to bowl first a decision he may be regretting as Sussex raced to 86-0 before rain returned just after 12:30.

Phil Salt led the Sussex charge attacking the bowling at every opportunity reaching his second first class half century off 60 balls including one huge six over over square leg.

Luke Wells has been more sedate in reaching 25 and Sussex will hoping the weather clears to allow them to build on an excellent start.

  20. 'Difficult conditions for Middlesex'published at 13:06 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Middlesex 46-2 v Glamorgan - lunch

    Nick Webb
    BBC Wales Sport

Just 12 overs have been bowled at Lord's in the first session, with Middlesex losing both openers in difficult conditions.

One over at 11:00 was followed by a 70-minute break, even though the rain lasted far less than that.

Max Holden was caught behind off Lukas Carey for 7, while Sam Robson played around one from Michael Hogan for 17.

England Test batsman Dawid Malan and Stevie Eskinazi lasted until lunch at 46-2.
