It's going to be a frustrating day if the forecast is right.

We've still got no play at New Road, Taunton and Old Trafford in Division One.

In Division Two, they got one over in at Lord's before it started raining, play has been abandoned already at Northants and there will be no play before lunch at Leicestershire.

Sussex is the place to be this morning - the hosts are 45-0 against Gloucestershire.

    Hampshire 17-0 v Essex

Hello - someone tell Jimmy Adams that it's not a batting day.

The Hampshire opener drives Jamie Porter for a couple of boundaries in the fifth over.

The outfield is slow, but the ball still got there. Good timing from the experienced batsman.

    Hampshire 9-0 v Essex

Essex opening pair Jamie Porter and Sam Cook are looking threatening, but still no breakthrough after four overs.

It looks like rain is approaching the Ageas Bowl, but we might be okay for another hour or so.

    Fingers crossed.

    It was a difficult chance.

Joe Weatherley finds the boundary for the first time, guiding Essex seamer Sam Cook down to the third-man boundary.

BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James has just said Sam Northeast is likely to have surgery on his broken little finger.

Let's hope it doesn't keep the Hampshire batsman out for too long.

Sussex's solid start is turning into a fine one in difficult batting conditions.

Phil Salt is up to 22 off just 26 balls, Luke Wells is digging in at the other end.

This is really disappointing news for Hampshire fans.

Sam Northeast has a suspected broken little finger after injuring himself in fielding practice yesterday.

Joe Weatherley comes in and is opening the batting for Hants.

He gets off the mark with a lovely drive down the ground for three off Jamie Porter.

  13. 'Worries for day two already'published at 11:29 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

Northants v Durham - no play Friday, rain

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Newcastle

Umpires Nick Cook and Graham Lloyd abandoned play at Wantage Road before 10.30am. Ironically that was during a brief respite from the rain, but as I write now it is hammering down again.

There are already worries about day two because they did ground work on the field during the winter and the bad weather means the grass has not been able to settle properly yet.

The forecast for later is horrendous. Had this been in Chester-le-Street, however, they would have started on time.

Yesterday was a lovely sunny day in Northampton and four years ago Durham began their championship season here and had four days of sunshine as well. Weather, eh?

Alastair Cook - England entitled to drop me if I don't score runs

Some interesting words from England's leading Test runscorer Alastair Cook this week.

The 33-year-old wants to carry on playing for his country, but admits the selectors are "entitled" to drop him if he does not continue to score runs.

The Essex opener will be looking to get his season off to a good start at the Ageas Bowl, although whether or not he'll get to bat remains to be seen.

The forecast is dreadful and Hampshire are batting first.
