No play at Leicesterpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

Leicestershire v Derbyshire - day one abandoned, rain

    Richard Rae
    BBC Radio Leicester Sport

A dry period at noon, during which the ground staff managed to remove much of the standing water, raised hopes of at least a few overs play late in the day at the Fischer County Ground.

But the return of the rain 30 minutes later confirmed the inevitable, and umpires Michael Gough and Jeff Evans have duly made the call after the usual outstanding lunch - now generally acknowledged to be the best on the county circuit.

During lunch, umpire Evans let slip he had spent a couple of weeks of his winter in Kenya, during which he visited the Masai Mara reserve. "Saw everything", he vouchsafed, meaning the full panoply of magnificent African wildlife. "Could have seen most of them in Wales, of course, but not quite the same, is it?"

    Middlesex 34-1 v Glamorgan

Stevie Eskinazi is into attacking mode straight away for Middlesex with a couple of fours.

I'm afraid to say the weather appears to be closing in again at Lord's - but for now they carry on.

  7. Adams & Weatherley start wellpublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 27 April 2018

    Hampshire 41-0 v Essex

    Nick Gledhill
    BBC Essex

Hampshire will be pleased with their start in the hour's play possible after an uncontested toss.

Jimmy Adams could be in his final season but has looked in fine form with some confident cover drives. Joe Weatherley is looking to stake his claim for a regular spot at the top of the order and needs to take this opportunity after a good start.

The Essex bowlers have found some movement with opening bowler Sam not the only Cook returning to the Essex side at a ground where he impressed last season.

    Too short from Sam Cook.

Joe Weatherley flays the seamer down to the third-man boundary before slashing him through point for another four.

Essex will surely be frustrated they are yet to find the breakthrough.

It's tough for the batsmen out there, but Joe Weatherley and Jimmy Adams are doing a sterling job.
