    Surrey 212-3 (72 overs) v Worcestershire

It is a first century of the season for new club captain Rory Burns as the Surrey opener flicks Charlie Morris for two.

The opener brings up his hundred up off 224 balls, with nine fours. It has been a well worked innings and his partnership with Ben Foakes has moved on to 113 runs now.

  2. 'Crazy day' at Chelmsfordpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 50 v Essex 142 - tea

    Glenn Speller
    BBC Essex sport

Tea arrives at Chelmsford and we can all take a deep breath.

They say you never know the state of a game until both sides have batted and that’s been proven here.

Having hustled out Yorkshire for just 50, Essex have lost wickets at regular intervals but Dan Lawrence’s 48 and Simon Harmer’s 36 are already looking like a big effort.

We did think batting would get easier but the ball is still doing enough to offer encouragement for the bowlers and only five players have reached double figures on a crazy day.

Now, how about Yorkshire not making the 92 required to make Essex bat again? We’re already making plans for a trip to the seaside or a day in the garden on Monday as this game looks like it might not even reach Sunday!

Simon Harmer picks up back-to-back fours off Jack Brooks, but his invaluable innings for Essex comes to an end in the next over when he is caught at mid-on. It gives Ben Coad figures of 3-27 and the home side lead by 92. Unless Yorkshire bat a whole lot better than they did this morning, this game could conceivably be over in a single day. For now, the two sides are level in terms of points, with three each.

  4. Bowlers dominate in Cardiffpublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Glamorgan 94 v Kent 40-3 (15 overs) - tea

    Adam Whitty
    BBC Radio Kent

If you want to see two more contrasting sessions, then you won't beat Sophia Gardens this afternoon.

We looked like we were in for the long haul with Glamorgan 57-0 at lunch, with Jack Murphy and Nick Selman batting bravely, if slowly.

Darren Stevens, 42, took 6-26 to bowl out Glamorgan

Then 13 wickets fell in the afternoon session, Darren Stevens (6-26) and Matt Henry (4-31) bowling Glamorgan out for 94 in just over an hour for 37 runs and within 15.2 overs.

Kent have not found it much easier. Sean Dickson, Heino Kuhn and Daniel Bell-Drummond have all fallen cheaply to leave them in a precarious position on 40-3, a deficit of 54. A huge amount rests on Joe Denly to see Kent to some sort of safety.

  5. Late bonus for Durhampublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Leicestershire 203-3 v Durham - tea

    Richard Rae
    BBC Radio Leicester Sport

A wicket with the last ball before tea was a serious bonus for Durham, James Weighell finding the edge of the in-form Colin Ackermann's defensive bat to ensure the session finished with honours just about even.

Paul Horton was the first man to go, steering a long-hop straight to point after a record opening stand for Leicestershire against Durham with captain Michael Carberry, and Carberry followed shortly afterwards, leg before to an in-swinger.

Still, 203-3 is a position of some strength after you've been put in, and if Mark Cosgrove bats for any length of time, it will be a lot stronger for the Foxes before the close.

They will likely keep going to a little while longer at Trent Bridge now as Hampshire look to wrap up this Nottinghamshire innings.

  9. Holden out for a heropublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Middlesex 205-8 v Sussex - tea

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London

Max Holden has led Middlesex's recovery at Hove with his maiden half-century for the county.

He arrived at the crease just before lunch and saw his side slump to 71-5 but has batted with patience and maturity beyond his years.

Sussex will be bitterly disappointed by the five chances they have put down today but batting has appeared to ease considerably since the ball softened after the first interval.

Tim Murtagh has helped steady the visitors' push to the first batting point after all three wickets to fall in the afternoon came in the second half of the session.

    Yorkshire 50 v Essex 121-9 (39.4 overs)

    Nottinghamshire 271-8 v Hampshire

Fidel Edwards produces an impressive bouncer, which flicks off Luke Fletcher's glove and is well taken by Lewis McManus behind the stumps.

Another important breakthrough just before tea for Hampshire, who have done really well all day to continue to chip away at Notts' batting-line up

Riki Wessels brings up his first half-century of the season as he takes a single off Fidel Edwards.

It has been a good innings, coming off 86 balls with seven fours and a six and has helped solidify Notts' batting despite seeing his side lose regular wickets.

    Yorkshire 50 v Essex 120-8 (39 overs)

Emboldened by his six off Tim Bresnan (see 3.50 entry), Peter Siddle attempts to crash a boundary on the up off Jack Brooks, only to find Gary Ballance in position at wide mid-off to take the catch. A bit too cavalier for his own good there. Still, Essex are 70 to the good as Jamie Porter emerges from the hutch.

  14. Burns anchors watchful Surreypublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Surrey 176-3 v Worcestershire - tea

    Chris Egerton
    BBC Hereford & Worcester commentator

Surrey's batsmen have had to play very watchfully, following two quick wickets after lunch. Joe Leach removed both Scott Borthwick and Ryan Patel for 10 and has found movement throughout the day.

Rory Burns has barely played a full-blooded shot for his 84 with support from Ben Foakes (41*) and together they've added 77 for the fourth wicket.

Showing plenty of promise in the South London sunshine has been left-arm spinner Ben Twohig. The 20-year-old Worcestershire Academy product - born in Dewsbury - has a classic action and his desire to give the ball a rip has been very intriguing to watch.

Essex reach three-figure totalpublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 50 v Essex 103-7 (36 overs)

Peter Siddle stylishly hoists a six, the first of the match, over long-on in the latest Tim Bresnan over at Chelmsford, but Essex have now more than doubled Yorkshire's first innings total - even though they're only just over half-way towards a batting bonus point. Siddle has 13 not out and Simon Harmer is one nine.

    Nottinghamshire 265-7 (56 overs) v Hampshire

Stuart Broad's fun at Trent Bridge is over... for the time being!

The England bowler smacks Brad Wheal for a pair of fours before being caught at mid-on as he attempted to hit another boundary.

Riki Wessels remains unbeaten on 49 as Luke Fletcher joins him at the crease.

  18. Leicestershire lose openerspublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Leicestershire 185-2 (58 overs) v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Newcastle

It took until the middle of the day before Durham got their first wicket after putting Leicestershire in in the warmth of Chester-le-Street.

Paul Horton (75) was the man to go as he cut a slow bouncer from Nathan Rimmington to Cameron Steel at point. He seemed to be through the shot early after not giving a chance until then.

His partnership of 146 with Michael Carberry at the top of the order was the Foxes' best against Durham, beating the 101 by Darren Robinson and Darren Maddy in a Leicestershire win at the Riverside back in 2004.

Carberry soon followed Horton though, as he fell for lbw to Barry McCarthy for 73.

  19. Burns edging towards centurypublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Rory Burns is continuing along his merry way but taking his time while doing it!

The Surrey opener is 17 runs away from his first Championship century of the season.

Ben Foakes is keeping Burns company, with an equally watchful 39 off 75 balls.

A third success for Tim Bresnan, who is reaping the benefits of bowling a tight line and length. Essex skipper Ryan ten Doeschate is the man to go, Bresnan's second lbw victim, and the former England seamer now has 3-16. Peter Siddle comes out to partner Simon Harmer.
