  1. Hectic morning at Chelmsfordpublished at 13:11 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 50 v Essex 10-2 (5 overs) - lunch

The final over of the morning at Chelmsford is a maiden from Ben Coad to Dan Lawrence, with Yorkshire unable to claim a third breakthrough after a batting display they will want to forget - very quickly.

Their innings lasted just 18.4 overs, with Joe Root out first ball and skipper Gary Ballance the only batsman to reach double figures, making 22.

Alastair Cook and Tom Westley also registered ducks as Essex began their reply in equally unimpressive fashion. What will the afternoon bring?

  3. 50 runs

FOR SAMIT PATELpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Nottinghamshire 134-4 (26 overs) v Hampshire

A brilliant, swift run-a-ball half-century for Nottinghamshire batsman Samit Patel who brings up his fifty with a sweetly timed boundary off Liam Dawson.

Patel has hit nine fours in his innings so far, upping the scoring rate immensely for Nottinghamshire and, despite having just lost his partner Taylor, he looks in terrific nick today.

  4. wicket

WICKET Westley (b Brooks) 0published at 12:57 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 50 v Essex 2-2 (3.1 overs)

After removing Alastair Cook with the final ball of his last over, Jack Brooks strikes with the first ball of this one as Tom Westley loses his middle stump and becomes the latest member of the exclusive 'Golden Duck' club at Chelmsford. There is to be no treble for the Yorkshire seamer, though, as Dan Lawrence survives the next delivery.

Remember, Westley was playing Test cricket last summer. Does anyone want to be in the batting lineup against Pakistan later this month?

  5. wicket

WICKET Cook (c Bairstow b Brooks) 0published at 12:51 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 50 v Essex 2-1 (2 overs)

    Alastair CookImage source, Rex Features

Having seen his successor Joe Root depart for a first-ball duck earlier this morning, Alastair Cook matches his non-score as he drives at an angled ball from Jack Brooks and gives a thin edge through to keeper Jonny Bairstow. To say England's current crop of Test batsmen are struggling at the moment may be the understatement of the year so far - but we're saying it anyway.

  6. wicket

WICKET Taylor run out (Amla) 47published at 12:46 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Nottinghamshire 122-4 (23.1 overs) v Hampshire

A mix-up in the middle between Ross Taylor and Samit Patel sees the New Zealand batsman run out by Hashim Amla three runs short of his half-century.

It ended a 95-run fourth-wicket partnership between the Nottinghamshire pair, with both players having gone on the attack after losing three early wickets.

  7. 50 runs

FOR MARCUS TRESCOTHICKpublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Somerset 99-1 (25 overs) v Lancashire

Former England opener Marcus Trescothick reaches a 68-ball half-century with a single off Jordan Clark at Old Trafford as Somerset continue to roll along at a healthy rate. It's the 189th time he has passed 50 in a first-class game and the visitors are now hoping he can convert it into a 66th century. Partner George Bartlett - who is 22 years Trescothick's junior - has 14 not out.

  8. wicket

WICKET Ballance (c Browne b Siddle) 22published at 12:35 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 50 (18.4 overs) v Essex

Yorkshire's embarrassment is complete as their captain is the last man to go, tamely jabbing at a ball from Peter Siddle and the edge is well-taken by Nick Browne at third slip. It's the White Rose county's lowest Championship score since 1973.

Sam Cook finishes with 5-28 for Essex and Siddle 4-7 from just 3.4 overs.

Are there demons in the pitch? Presumably not, as Ballance chose to bat after winning the toss, but their bowlers need to produce something special or they could find themselves a long way behind by the close.

  9. Division Two round-uppublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

England batsman Dawid Malan is at the crease for Middlesex at Hove, where the visitors have moved on to 67-2 after losing both openers early. Malan is 11 not out, but partner Stevie Eskinazi is doing the bulk of the scoring, with 38 to his name.

Still no success for Durham's bowlers against Leicestershire at the Riverside, with Paul Horton now 40 not out and Michael Carberry on 32, while Glamorgan have moved on to 40-0 in the 24th over against Kent.

Derbyshire have made a breakthrough on day two at Edgbaston with Will Rhodes caught behind off Mark Footitt for exactly 50. Nightwatchman Chris Wright is still there, though, on 46, with Ian Bell 16 not out, and the Warwickshire total on 128-2.

  10. wicket

WICKET Brooks (c Foster b Siddle) 0published at 12:23 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 45-9 (16.4 overs) v Essex

    Peter SiddleImage source, Rex Features

Two wickets in three balls for Essex's Peter Siddle as Steve Patterson and Jack Brooks are both caught behind for ducks. Yorkshire now in danger of being bowled out for under 50 as last man Ben Coad comes out to join Gary Ballance.

Last week, Siddle was wearing a woolly hat against Hampshire - today he's just wearing the look of a bowler who is hungry for wickets.

  11. Cautious start by Glamorganpublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Glamorgan 30-0 (20 overs) v Kent

    Nick Webb
    BBC Wales Sport

It was a very cautious start for Glamorgan under cloudy skies in Cardiff as they battled for survival against Kent's Kiwi quick Matt Henry.

Nick Selman edged one through the slips at catchable height, while Jack Murphy was repeatedly beaten outside the off-stump.

But they got through the opening spells from Henry and Darren Stevens, albeit with a paltry run-rate.

  12. wicket

WICKET Stoneman run out (Barnard) 28published at 12:20 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Surrey 50-1 (19.4 overs) v Worcestershire

Disaster for Mark Stoneman, as the Surrey opener calls for a quick single, having turned the ball away on the off side, but is beaten by the brilliant arm of Ed Barnard whose direct hit from the bowlers end sends the stumps flying.

Scott Borthwick joins Rory Burns at the crease for the hosts.

  13. WICKET (Bresnan (lbw Cook) 1published at 12:19 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 42-7 (15.2 overs) v Essex

Brilliant bowling by Sam Cook, who takes five wickets in an innings for the third time. Tim Bresnan is the man to go and the Yorkshire tail is now exposed, with Steve Matterson coming out to join captain Gary Ballance. Essex really looking like the champions they are this morning, and Cook has 5-21 so far.

  14. Notts pair 'racing along'published at 12:16 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Nottinghamshire 92-3 (16 overs) v Hampshire

    Kevan James
    Sport Presenter, BBC Radio Solent

It was a great start by Hampshire, having reduced Notts to 27-3.

However, since then they have struggled to contain the scoring rate - with seven boundaries in eight balls in the last few minutes.

The bowlers have generally been guilty of hitting two lengths and Ross Taylor and Samit Patel have been very positive. Their partnership is racing along at close to eight an over.

  15. Cricket for the purists in Londonpublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Surrey 38-0 (17 overs) v Worcestershire

As Surrey continue to slowly plug away against Worcestershire at the Oval, you would be forgiven if minds had begun to drift elsewhere.

Young Ben Twohig received his County cap from Pears CEO Matt Rawnsley ahead of his first-class debut this morning. Quite some venue for the 20-year-old to be playing his first senior match.

  16. wicket

WICKET Leaning (lbw Siddle) 7published at 12:11 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Yorkshire 41-6 (14.3 overs) v Essex

Yorkshire skipper Gary Ballance has reached double figures - and given events at the other end, that's quite an achievement. Jack Leaning is the latest to go at Chelmsford, lbw as he tries to play through mid-wicket and is struck on the back leg, with Australian Peter Siddle claiming his first victim of the match

  17. wicket

WICKET Renshaw (c Clark b Bailey) 21published at 12:05 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Somerset 65-1 (15 overs) v Lancashire

Tom Bailey conceded 29 from his opening three overs for Lancashire, but his second spell yields a reward as Matt Renshaw tries to swing him away to leg but is caught by Jordan Clark at mid-wicket. That wasn't an injudicious choice of shot by the Australian, who is replaced at the crease by George Bartlett. Marcus Trescothick is 41 not out at the other end.

  18. Leaders lose early wicketspublished at 12:03 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

Nottinghamshire’s decision to bat first hasn’t paid dividends on the first morning of their home match at Trent Bridge against Hampshire.

The Division One leaders lost captain Steven Mullaney for 11, to a mistimed pull off Kyle Abbott, before Fidel Edwards removed both Chris Nash (11) and Jake Libby (0) in the same over.

Ross Taylor and Samit Patel have both begun their innings with boundaries.

  20. Patel and Taylor help Notts rebuildpublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

    Nottinghamshire 52-3 (12 overs) v Hampshire

After suffering some early losses Samit Patel and overseas player Ross Taylor are rebuilding for hosts Notts at Trent Bridge.

The fourth-wicket pair have put on 29 runs so far at a decent rate, although neither player would have expected to be batting so early in the day for the current Championship leaders having chosen to bat first this morning.
