Acting England director of cricket Andy Flower on deputising for Andrew Strauss: "There are big shoes to fill, even on a temporary basis. Hopefully Andrew is only away for three months. I won't be trying to reinvent the wheel.

"I'll be present at selection meetings but I'll be very much taking a back seat - but asking some challenging questions."

  2. Shafiq smashes Bess for sixpublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 25 May 2018

The prolific Asad Shafiq took a bold approach in the final over with a mighty swipe at spinner Dom Bess and a gentleman in the crowd got the opportunity to hurl the ball back to the fielders. Pakistan closed the session only 48 behind with seven wickets intact.

Jimmy Anderson looked a bit like Phillip Schofield with that silver blonde hair he had recently, now it is almost excessively dark, a little like Gary Numan perhaps? Anyway, England's leading wicket-taker claimed his first scalp of the innings when he trapped Ali to leave Pakistan on 119-3, the tourists deciding not to bother with a review and replays confirming it would have been umpire's call for height.

Opener Azar Ali continued to fifty, here with a boundary off Ben Stokes, one of the six fours he hit.

Thanks Amy, the players are back in the legendary pavilion and here's what they can all choose from in there. Any crumble and custard is always good, but why put almonds in?

Off England troop, looking a little downcast. Getting rid of Azhar Ali is a big bonus, but Pakistan only trail by 48 runs.

That's me done for a bit - Jamie Lillywhite will take you through to tea.

  10. Lunch - Pak 136-3published at 13:02 British Summer Time 25 May 2018

    Trail by 48 runs

Asad Shafiq takes a single, much to the relief of Mickey Arthur, who looked half-amused and half-worried when that six went sailing into the stands.

Babar Azam knocks the final ball away from his feet, and that, folks, is lunch.

Wallop! Asad Shafiq has deposited Dom Bess' first ball way over the boundary rope for six!

Dearie me, he didn't have get hold of that. Down on one knee and into the crowd it goes.

Another attempt to get the umpire to change the ball, another failure.

Dom Bess will bowl the final over before lunch.

I think if I was Joe Root I would bowl Anderson straight away after lunch. He'll have 40 minutes rest for lunch and he is bowling beautifully.

Asad Shafiq convinces Babar Azam to take a quick single, despite a swooping Dom Bess charging towards the ball.

James Anderson to continue, with five minutes to go until lunch.

Here's how he struck from the Nursery End a little earlier...

    Babar 7, Shafiq 20

Babar Azam is off the mark with a boundary! He leans back and cuts Dom Bess through the off side and away for four. Mark Wood gives chase, but to no avail.

Another little dab adds three to Pakistan's total.

Bess just has to keep that end tight, if he gets a wicket that's a bonus, because Anderson is capable of two or three wickets.

  19. Pak 120-3published at 48 overs

    Trail by 64 runs

Asad Shafiq gets caught playing away from his body, but his hands are soft and the ball goes on the bounce to a tumbling Jos Buttler at gully.

Play and a miss from Shafiq! That's a lovely ball from James Anderson, and there's a grin on his face as he strolls over to the umpire.

Compton Stand update. More corks popping. A chap in a waistcoat covered in Union flags is eating cherry tomatoes. Further down the row, a younger fella dips prawns into a pink sauce and there's a fizzy, white, alcoholic beverage in a plastic wine glass. The collective preparation of food and drink is of a certain standard.
