Ian‏: Too many people think England's problems are just with their batting but far from it! We failed to take 20 wickets in all seven Tests in the winter. We rely too heavily on Anderson who is on his last legs and we don't have a decent spinner! England are in trouble.

Has Bess got the "doosra" in his repertoire? The off-spinner turned one sharply away from the right-hander in any case. Maybe it hit a crack, but it didn't hit the stumps or take the edge so it just goes down as a dot. A reminder there is a new BBC podcast called The Doosra, presented by Isa Guha.

If you're going to flash, flash hard! Shafiq has played really well. Pakistan have done it right today.

    Pak 177-3

Wood gallops in again off his short run and Shafig flashes one high over the slip cordon to record his 11th Test fifty in his 60th match. Still only the two wickets to fall today.

Just don't see Joe Root as captain material. Bat first at Lord's when overcast? Fielding at short leg? His runs drying up? Doesn't suit you sir. Who else though?

  7. Pak 173-3published at 62 overs

    Shafiq 48, Babar 25

Cook is now under the helmet close in to the bat as Bess returns from the Nursery End for his seventh over of the innings. Not much turn yet for the 20-year-old, but at least he is getting through his overs quickly.

Jordan: Umpires get a lot of stick, but that was a great decision. I thought that was out in real time too.

It looked as if the old sage Cook was saying that it had come off the elbow but Wood and Root were convinced there so England have only one review remaining.

That's a real sign of desperation. All those around the bat must have seen that. There will have been plenty on the field who would have seen where it hit him.

It is swiftly rejected by the third umpire Bruce Oxenford. In raising his arms to offer no stroke, Shafiq was indeed brushed on the elbow.

Shafiq has clearly been hit, somewhere around the arm and the hand. Was the hand on the bat handle? It's an unusual one.

  13. England reviewpublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 25 May 2018

    Pak 171-3

Wood back in the attack and he is convinced he has a wicket. But Shafiq rubs his elbow.

For a moment there, I think Anderson thought he was in business, but Asad Shafiq got more than enough bat on it.

Shafiq collects his fifth four with a wristy flick off his pads, the sort of shot that an amateur gets a leading edge to and offers a simple return catch to the bowler. Anderson with 1-54 from 16 overs which do not do him justice.

    Shafiq 42, Babar 21

Broad completes his 17th over but no further success for him today to add to the scalp of Inzamam's nephew yesterday. Still the England fielders complain about the shape of the ball, but still their pleas are swiftly rebuffed by the officials.

A rare wild stroke from Shafiq and it fizzes beyond Butler at third slip away to the boundary. No luck for Anderson, who is troubling the batsmen with some beautifully shaped away swingers. His mood is not helped by a short one which is stylishly punched off the back foot to the boundary by Babar.

  20. Pak 151-3published at 57 overs

    Broad 1-30

Shafiq keeps the bowling with a single off Broad's final delivery and a smiling Cook returns to the middle so luckily there was no damage from that devilishly difficult dropped chance.
